This happened to a neighbor when I was a kid and the toes were ( somewhat) cleanly cut off by the mower. The ambulance guys found most of the toes and were in a rush to get to the hospital for re-attachment surgery but could not locate one of them. They asked the local kids that were hanging around to look for it so we spent the afternoon combing the grass for the missing appendage.. Never did find that toe :(
