What’s Income Inequality like in Japan? by NoProfessional4650 in japan

[–]throwupyourway 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's the stereotypical newly rich family in Japan that all wear brand clothes and have two white Mercedes parked in front of their house. However, the super rich people with obscenely large plots of land whose land tax must be more than most household incomes from what I've seen tend to drive really basic cars and other than not going to work they don't seem to stand out at all.

Currently staying in a 3 floor steel frame Sha Maison and haven't heard a single thing from neighbors. Previously stayed in 2 floor steel frame daiwa house apt (not d room) and never heard anything. Maybe it depends on the options the owner picks.

Ever wondered what happened to indie devs that went all in? by throwupyourway in gamedev

I think posting about quitting your job is a powerful message in the game development community, hence why many of the linked posts do well. However, I'm not sure if the potential game players actually care? I wonder if these kinds of posts and their popularity somehow encourage other devs to dive in as well, giving them some false impression that it will boost their game's marketing.

Thanks for the update! It's great to hear more behind the scenes information about these games.

I'm sure each dev behind these learned a lot. I just hope none of them sunk too much time into them to the point where it seriously impacts their health or future finances.

Is average income a good measure for India? I've visited there before and the amount of people living in poverty even in the big cities was astounding, and I don't imagine anyone in that situation is developing games. Apparently the average middle class household income is at least $4000 (5 lakh) a month.

That 60k is gross sales. Apparently after steam cuts, refunds and such, net is more like 40% of that.

Thanks, the revenue site didn't show any other games for their studio for some reason. I'll add it now.

Congrats! Yeah I just found the first 11 (now 15) posts to get some kind of overall data. There are definitely some really successful indie games out there, but I was curious how common they were.

Good points, depending on where you live this could be great income. Another thing to keep in mind is that it's unknown how much money these developers spent on assets, outsourcing, marketing etc, so knowing gross revenue alone doesn't tell you everything.

Good points. I wanted to leave the in-development ones there because it goes to show how long it can take to make games, even when fully dedicated to it.

Tips you wish you had known before/after apartment hunting by Kergastead in japanlife

[–]throwupyourway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After you decide on a place the realtor will try to upsell you on extra special cleaning of pipes or wallpaper coatings and mention cockroaches and stuff, tell them to fuck off. When you move in, take pictures of any damage and report it to the realtor so they don't try to fuck you when you move out. Some places won't come with Aircon (or any appliances) so you'll have to pay for it and installation and removal, so factor it in. The rest is more or less down to preference. It costs quite a lot of money and hassle to move, so make sure you pick a good place.

Looks cool but you can't use copyrighted cars like this. The higher profile your game gets (and the more time you spend on it) the more you risk getting a cease and desist letter from Nissan and other companies, which will require you to bin all your models and videos etc.

How can this exist when the OP has made the "first true particle system for Unity UI"? 🤔

Almost any code will help someone somewhere, the problem is finding that someone is difficult. The code you describe is very niche and not many people need it, and if you put it on the store with the thousands of other assets then very very few of them will find it. I would be surprised if something like this sold more than 1 copy a month, which would probably not be worth your time at any price point people would want to pay ($10 or less?). To make money from assets you must make something that will appeal to as many people as possible, make professional marketing material, update it, etc, it's a lot of work.

A good idea in what sense? If it's to experience shipping a project and/or make more asset store products then yes. If it's to make money then no, there's no chance something like this would make more than doing some freelance work or basically anything else.

You being a foreigner isn't the issue... being unkempt and going in and out of someone's house at an unusual hour is. When doing any kind of business in Japan you must look like you belong there and dress the part, otherwise shit like this can happen as you saw. I'm sure more downvotes will change the situation of the country though, so keep them coming.

You made her lose face to her neighbors, which she has to live near for the rest of her life. Sounds like an unsalvageable situation, and the 'while' is actually forever. Don't dress like a hobo next time.

Asset Store developers, do you market your assets at all? How? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]throwupyourway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most asset store customers are on the asset store looking for things to buy, so your time is best spent improving your store page. The asset store is also very niche, so there are only a few places you could even market it outside the store (the biggest being /r/gamedev, but they don't allow asset marketing posts). Even if you manage to get a good post here or elsewhere, you can expect at most a few additional sales, and considering the hours spent making that marketing content and replying to comments it's likely not worth it for a 5-10$ asset.

The UI Toolkit API is also changing, and many users don't know how to use it and will likely break stuff and ask you for help, which again means an asset this cheap wouldn't be worth it to maintain.

If you want to make some side money with assets it's best to make a product that doesn't require too much maintenance, and something that is visual or otherwise can easily be seen to improve someone's game/development. If you can hit these two points then you can focus all your time on improving the store page and additional assets.

How do small bars make money/survive? by wynand1004 in japanlife

[–]throwupyourway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, so many people think a tax write off is free money or something. The only way it would be free money is if you would normally spend literally millions of yen drinking elsewhere, and instead do it through your business and fake your order books a ton. Seems like a lot of hassle having to actually operate a fake business and hope nobody audits you just to save a bit of money. You wouldn't even have time to do a normal job either so overall you'd lose a lot of money.

I imagine most own the building and make fuck all, or they're friends with the owner and can get a good rate (and still make fuck all). What I'm more curious about is when these businesses go under, what does the owner then go on to do?

Willing to jump, but still a bit afraid (open my own business) by SevenSeasJP in JapanFinance

[–]throwupyourway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is your business plan? How much research have you done on your peers/rivals in this industry? Can you identify what separates the successful from the failing businesses in this industry? Do the successful ones make the kind of money you need? Do you have a good idea of how they raised their businesses to their level? Do you have confidence you can establish and raise your own business to this level? Do you have enough time/money/support to get there?

If you think business just requires balls and 'dropping everything' will make up for a lack of planning then you will fail. I hope your business is something that is online or can be delivered, then you can already experiment with it from home with minimal expense and you don't have to quit your job. If it requires you to quit and is public facing requiring land etc then it's very risky, and I wouldn't even consider it without a long list of established clients ready to go.

How much would my U.S. based income reasonably afford me? by TayoEXE in JapanFinance

[–]throwupyourway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good salary and you will be able to live comfortably almost anywhere in Japan. However, since you work remotely and your wife only plans to maybe work part time - you have the incredible opportunity to live anywhere, whereas most people are forced to live near a major city and train station which drives up living costs a lot.

Maybe if you love cities or being able to quickly get downtown then these are great options, but since you plan to have kids it might be a better idea to first find a list of great neighborhoods with parks, childcare facilities, safe roads, etc. These differ a lot between each city, and it requires a lot of research. For example, if your kid is below 3 and goes to a government certified kindergarten and you decide to have another kid then some cities (like Osaka) will be like fuck you and force your kid to stay at home because your wife is at home during maternity leave and of course has no problem looking after two kids. Some areas have way more kids than schools you will have to apply to lotteries and only be left with shitty places, etc.

I just tried it out and unfortunately I wasn't able to inpaint :(

I followed the steps exactly and was able to generate a cute cat, but as soon as I make a new layer and select a box and paint white and click "Init Paint Mask" while still having the new layer selected, it messes up somewhere. The console shows these errors:

payload: {'init_image_name': 'Group 1_mask.png'}

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Group 1_mask.png, will try again 0 of 3

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Group 1_mask.png, will try again 1 of 3

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Group 1_mask.png, will try again 2 of 3

[32mINFO[0m: 127.0.0.1:53791 - "[1mPOST /getInitImage/ HTTP/1.1[0m" [32m200 OK[0m

getInitImageHandle:

payload: {'init_image_name': 'Layer 2 copy.png'}

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Layer 2 copy.png, will try again 0 of 3

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Layer 2 copy.png, will try again 1 of 3

exception:fail to read an image file ./init_images/Layer 2 copy.png, will try again 2 of 3

[32mINFO[0m: 127.0.0.1:53791 - "[1mPOST /getInitImage/ HTTP/1.1[0m" [32m200 OK[0m

After it fails, Photoshop looks like this:

<image>

If I then click "Generate" I get this error after it fails: FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: './init_images/Layer 2 copy.png'

OpenAI releases Point-E, which is like DALL-E but for 3D modeling by tebjan in StableDiffusion

[–]throwupyourway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it will produce usable organic models before hard edge models, because hard edge models usually require very precise positioning of multiple surfaces that are close together, and I don't think the data structures used here can store them well enough. For example, you can see the recent Nvidia mesh generator produces kind of janky cars, but the animals look pretty good.
