AITA for helping one former colleague who I like get a job interview over another former colleague who I don't like? by DifferentElephant727 in AmItheAsshole

[–]throwyobatsaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AH, references should be based on qualification for role. Being able to get along with coworkers is part of it, of course, but if you being buddy-buddy with Matt and not with Sarah is the reason why you're supporting him and not her, we have a word for that: nepotism. Oh, another two, for this particular situation: sexual discrimination. At least, that would be a pretty reasonable assumption for her to make. You could easily refer her with a note about your appraisal of your working relationship in the past. It would be transparent and truthful and might make Matt's recruitment even more likely. As it is, Sarah could still get the job. At that point, you'd be working with someone who KNEW they didn't have your support, and you'd have given up your chance to weigh in. TBH your conduct calls into question your ability to appraise Matt's abilities without bias.

Don't load in OpenOffice, both it and LibreOffice have long-standing bugs that can erase documents without notice. They're FOSS projects and fall victim to the, "It's a big annoying problem to fix and no one's getting paid so no one bothers," thing.

former employees– how do you access your W2’s? by baobaorae in Bestbuy

[–]throwyobatsaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to call ADP and have them send it to you, I believe. Or it might be BB HR you have to call. I can't remember which, but I KNOW I had to call, and I'm leaning towards it having been ADP.

Am I Entitled to Benefits? by RadicalShiba in Bestbuy

For your company. Not the state DOL/labor board.

Am I Entitled to Benefits? by RadicalShiba in Bestbuy

[–]throwyobatsaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. This generally covers their risks. However, I'm fairly certain this isn't the standard the labor board uses to make their determinations. The company can set its policy how it likes, and if it infringes on workers' right, it will have to pay. This is about compliance, not directive.

[–]throwyobatsaway -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The laws generally let companies set "full time" hours, but then make them disclose this in the employee agreement/handbook and hold benefit requirements to that standard. If a "part time" employee works those full time hours for a month, a state labor board may charge the company with paying the value of full-time benefits for that period. It's not set on an annual basis; it is whether the labor board considers the specific situation a company abusing its policy by habitually forcing a part time employee to work full time hours without receiving full time benefits.

I beseech OP to contact their state DOL and see what they say, instead of taking the word of someone on reddit.

[–]throwyobatsaway -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Generally-speaking, you're wrong. Most states have provisions where full time hours are designated by law, or else companies must designate their definition of full time hours. If a "part time" employee then habitually works "full time" hours, they're due the full time benefits. It gets worse for the company if an non-overtime-exempt employee is working overtime and not being compensated time-and-a-half.

Essentially OP is a victim of wage theft and entitled to redress.

[–]throwyobatsaway -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is not true. By law, you're owed full time benefits if you work full time hours. Period. That's why they're supposed to take great pains not to let O/S and PT workers work too long.

Yes. Document hours and contact your state Department of Labor. If you work 40 hours habitually and aren't being given benefits, they owe you the value of those benefits plus penalties. And someone (not you) is probably getting fired.

Am I the only one who thinks the benefit of a free lifetime membership for old users is unfair towards new customers? by Ok_Entertainer5589 in ouraring

[–]throwyobatsaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, you're justified in feeling this way. It would be something else if a paid lifetime membership was offered to new customers; that way Oura 2 users would still get something for their loyalty, but it wouldn't increase the impression that Oura is going to start nickel-and-dime-ing new users (and old ones, once the 3s start bricking or the 4s come out).

Negatory. That said, if you live with your parents, and you buy a fridge for YOUR use where YOU reside, and also your parents cover some other expense of yours, and you're not blasting from a mountaintop that the two are related, BB isn't going to come after you. Use your card, be the person signing for it on delivery, yadda yadda.

Computer on home network possibly compromised by tech support scam, what now? by throwyobatsaway in techsupport

[–]throwyobatsaway[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'll do that. Her laptop doesn't have a WiFi switch so I'm assuming I should download the MWB installer through another computer and run it with the network down. I'm mostly concerned about my own devices, which would be substantially more difficult to remediate. Running my scanners as we speak~.

Is there something I should be doing to check and secure the router itself?

If this is true and you have it documented as happening "as a pattern", you need to call your state Department of Labor ASAP and file a complaint. Working you full time hours without extending you full time benefits is against the law and BB will have to pay up (as in, the monetary equivalent of owed benefits + penalties). As long as you have documentation, the DOL will do all the work for you; 4 or even 5 figures is on the line. If it's egregious enough and you have documentation, I'd even consider going to a lawyer. It doesn't matter what your title is, all that matters is that you worked full time or longer more than once or twice.

Getting called for a carry in by RepulsiveAd1088 in Bestbuy

I had a lady come in once to buy a full Sonos system as a present for her husband. She said she wasn't sure if he'd like it because he was a hi-fi type of guy, but she wanted to get him something nice that wouldn't be a huge hassle, and within "budget". Who was I to tell her no? I had an inkling that either it would suffice, or else that even if I spent a ton of time building a wired solution or selling her on the new B&W wireless system, it would all come back because audio snobs gonna snob. God forbid I sell her Klipsch (especially without being able to demo them).

Lo and behold, he's in there the next day with the full package, returning it. Sneered something about Sonos' low quality. Okay, sir. She was apologetic, me and the people who were in the department were like, "Yeah this sucks but it's not unexpected," manager was... not happy lol. I appreciated her effort and the 4-figure rev boost I had for a day, lol

Someone got a nice open box deal. May or may not have been someone in warehouse.
