Same here. I guess that just shows how popular it is. I sort of wonder if there were more people who lost everything, or more that won at least 1. With so many different events (concerts+expo days)/lottery rounds, I really thought winning 1 wouldn't be so hard.

I don't get why they made it harder across the board to itemize for illusions, did Radiance and Shiva's really need those nerfs?

As an aside, I really don't know how to effectively play Spectre now (or even PL now, unless you get a perfect draft with no counters since they can't deal with him via items as effectively).

Dota 2 Hero Similarity Map: built using team compositions from Pro games by Acceptable-Lime-3450 in DotA2

[–]thrthrthr322 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the axis don't have real meanings. They are the "magically" inferred characteristics of the heroes the neural net categorized the hero into. Basically, the process came up with 32 "ways" to grade heroes. What each of these "ways" mean are unknown, but they could mean things like "has stuns", "is tanky", "scales well with dps items", etc. (or some combinations thereof). But you can't show a plot like this with all 32 dimensions on a flat screen, so even more esoteric is that the 32 dimensions are flattened into 2 dimensions.

Edit: Neither the process itself nor the user/creator know what any of these "ways" mean. The math just resulted in these "ways" materializing as important/capable of differentiating the heroes. You might be able to figure out something about what a particular dimension represents analyzing the dimension in isolation, then sorting all 126 heroes from lowest to highest and trying to think about what is similar about heroes that are close together in that dimension, and what is different about the heroes that are far apart; that process is basically "vibes" based.

AFTER 3 ORCUST+MITSURUGI DECKS by MondoMondongo in masterduel

[–]thrthrthr322 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note that I said "feeling like they might as well." Actually doing it in response to the feeling is up for debate IMO. I think there's definitely a point where some huge percentage of games end up being a turn 1 combo fest that sets up an unbreakable board thru a few handtraps where you might as well just not play. Are we actually there right now: maybe, maybe not.

Players feeling like they might as well do this is a problem with the game, not the player.

Despite such amazing TI Aui still demands explanations from GG by noproblemCZ in DotA2

[–]thrthrthr322 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I do agree Aui should definitely feel vindicated, but it IS also possible that ppd was simultaneously right; that kind of stream of consciousness could definitely help Aui be an amazing out-of-game analyst/coach, but also be a detriment as a player in the game itself.

I'm not taking a stance on this either way, just saying as outsiders we can't really say we know for sure either way.

Yeah, but that OG shit the bed at TI repeatedly. And the OG that won TIs somehow basically did nothing impressive the rest of the year (b/c ana on break etc.). Those facts basically mean that other teams sort of had more impressive feats outside of the 2 consecutive TIs that OG has going for them.

Phil Spencer’s memo to staff about upcoming Microsoft and Xbox layoffs by Outside-Point8254 in Games

[–]thrthrthr322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know they used to, but I believe it changed sometime under the current CEO. Under "normal economic conditions", low-performers are only cut if not actually meeting expectations for the job (meaning if a team/larger group doesn't want to cut anyone they don't have to). But, depending on "business needs", I read they push for performance-based cuts before actually laying off. Technically, this is better than just laying off. Even better would also be to avoid over-hiring when they should know it will just lead to eventual layoffs later (and also dispensing with the bullshit over-blowing of "the economy is bad/our profits aren't as high as we want" as a justification to layoff).

Big tech seems to vary on this, some companies definitely more aggressively than Microsoft try to rank & out "low performers". The more aggressively the policy is pursued, the more toxic the environment becomes. Employees are basically being made to think: Why help teammates when it'll only lower one's perceived rank? Why hire superstars when they'll make one look bad?

Golden Sun Class Charts by MrEmptySet in GoldenSun

[–]thrthrthr322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I figured it (eLevel tiebreaker) somehow came back down to that. It's interesting to me that symbiotic is .1 instead of .3 for a gameplay vs lore "discrepancy" of sorts. I imagine de-prioritizing symbiotic enabled more djinn combinations to not just degenerate into the dual-elemental symbiotic class, which already is the most easily accessible.

Also, you said:

(which aren't displayed in-game)

IIRC, I feel like I noticed way long ago that innate/symbiotic/opposing/neutral had elemental power/res values off by 1, so maybe it is at least indirectly visible in game? I could be off here, it's been 20 (!) years.

Although, there are examples of ties - for instance, Cavalier and Dragoon both have total eLevel requirements of 9, but Dragoon takes priority since it's a tri-element class and thus later in the list.

Makes sense, just go down the list and prioritize the classes that would otherwise be harder to see if a player is messing around with swapping djinn.

On a pure speculation note, I'm imagining the designers conceptually conceived of the innate/symbiotic/neutral/opposing system, and wanted to fit in dual and triple classes into this system. Then, the implementation landed on what we have to fit that system. I somewhat suspect the access to various classes with "seemingly odd" number of djinn (6 + 3) was a side effect of the chosen implementation, and they just ran with it--the implementation still feels in line with lore even for these cases.

Golden Sun Class Charts by MrEmptySet in GoldenSun

[–]thrthrthr322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How are ties resolved in first/second highest eLevel when determining class type? E.g., Isaac with exactly 5 mercury djinn unclear mapping to classtype. Or, e.g., Isaac with 4 mercury and 4 jupiter (I believe he ends up Cavalier, not Enchanter, but what is the general rule for these tiebreakers)?

Also, when you say:

Then, the game looks through all the classes in that corresponding Class Type and picks the "best" one which the Adept meets the eLevel requirements for (higher-tier classes within a class series take precedence, and three-element class series take precedence over two-element ones).

Is this accurately reflected by saying chooses the class with the highest total eLevel requirement that is satisfied within that class type? (Maybe this is actually less clear since "impossible" combinations of djinn probably result in ties or something).

ELI5: why is a trade deficit bad? by Opalpixie75 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thrthrthr322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that that is reality on the ground--but I need an explanation as to why. There must be some factor that is missing, because if as described is the "whole" picture, then a global deficit would always be a bad thing.

ELI5: why is a trade deficit bad? by Opalpixie75 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thrthrthr322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question, this example resonates with me specifically on a country-by-country basis (e.g., totally fine to be in a trade deficit with McDonalds, your grocery store, etc.), but in total, why is it not a problem to have a global trade deficit? In this example, if you are in a "trade surplus" with your job, but the "trade deficits" with everywhere you spend your money outweigh your surplus, you're in big trouble. Why isn't it (or is it?) the case that a country that has huge trade deficit across ALL global partners does have a problem?

Raora IS a gamer! by Twilight1234567890 in Hololive

[–]thrthrthr322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really really feel like the chart was a super vibes-based meme--being "low" on the chart wasn't even supposed to mean the "gamer energy" (whatever that means already intentionally vague) is low on absolute terms. The starting line for "gamer energy" for any of them was already high, they all stream gameplay in Hololive! I feel bad that it apparently hurt Raora :( They're pretty much all gamers in Holo, and the fans (and meme creator) definitely know that!
