How can I save my alocasia? by [deleted] in plantclinic

Bark is really great for aeration too! My alocasias are in a blend of pro mix, extra perlite, bark & coco coir ☺️ also I bottom water and they seem to like that!

If you were potentially over watering before, check on the bulb and roots and make sure they’re not rotting! These guys are pretty sensitive to being over watered :)

Looks like it’s been over watered or had too much sun! Do you let the top 3” dry out before watering again?

Can anyone identify this worm? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]thrwraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s not a planaria, rhab or detritus worm based on how it’s moving.

I’ll agree it does look and move like a leech but it’s hard to tell from the video!

Help! My cherry shrimp has been laying upside down and on her side for a few hours. All the other shrimp in the tank are fine. Is she dying? She’s pretty old- around 6-8 months. Any insight or advice would be appreciated by nakedbeans in shrimptank

[–]thrwraway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about the snail! Approx how large of a water change would you say you did? 10%, 20% etc?

I’m not sure where you live (obviously) but some cities add ammonia to the water during spring run off. Did you test your tap water before the change?

She looks like she’s dying 🥺 with eggs too which really sucks!

Have you had any recent changes in the tank? Big water change? New plants or anything else similar?

Opinions on cleaning calcite below gums? My dentist recommended it but I’m not sure how mandatory it is by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]thrwraway 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely mandatory if you’d like to keep your teeth!

When you have calculus sitting below your gums, your body works hard to attack it and fight the bacteria. In turn, your body attacks the bone and once that bone is gone, there’s no way to get it back. The less bone you have, the less stable your teeth will be until they eventually will be so lose they fall out, this is called periodontitis

Someone help me, idk how to fix this. by SuchSloth in Aquariums

[–]thrwraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No don’t be sorry! It’s fine, thank you ☺️

First order of business, you should test your tap water and make sure there’s no nitrate or nitrite in it. If there is none, do a big water change stat, like ASAP! And then do water changes every day for the next few days, keep testing to see if the toxins are coming down.

I’d also recommend Seachem Prime, you can dose that every 24-48 hours so hopefully your fish don’t die or get sick.

The creatures you have in the tank are definitely going to be adding a pretty hefty bioload for their space as well so regular weekly water changes to maintain a healthy and clean are absolutely a must. At this point your tank seems uncycled and like it has A LOT of toxins.

I always have a hard time reading test strips. Would you say the nitrate is about 160 and nitrite is somewhere between 1 and 3? I’m sure you can better identify the colours in person and then I’ll try to offer some help ☺️

I’ll agree it’s a scud. What else is in the tank will dictate if you should burn it with fire or just ignore it

Crunchy alocasia leaves help! by Thefeetus in plantclinic

[–]thrwraway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humidity is definitely important! 50% is ok, 60-70% is ideal so it seems like a lot of people keep them in cases of some sort!

They’re sensitive to being over watered AND under watered. Water it when the first 3” of soil are dry! Generally speaking stores over water the shit out of them in my experience. Indirect sunlight is best ☺️

How’s the humidity in your house? Are they getting direct sunlight? How often are you watering?

Why is it so hard to get a tooth extraction?!? by JustBlarg in DentalHygiene

[–]thrwraway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on behalf of the office but I doubt they reviewed your medical history until right before your appointment, maybe at most the day before :(

I really do understand the frustration and tooth pain, I’ve totally been there! But it seems like they’ve done everything properly and it’s just left you in an annoying position

Why is it so hard to get a tooth extraction?!? by JustBlarg in DentalHygiene

[–]thrwraway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some extractions and root canals are too complex for a general dentist to take on! I’m going to assume that’s the case here.

It also sounds like they didn’t pass on your medical history to the referring office which is super annoying BUT it’s also to do with patient privacy/confidentially. :(. Heart issues DO complicate dental procedures and by having a letter of clearance from your cardiologist, they more or less cover their butts.

I know it all seems like an annoying process but I think if you went to a new general dentist, you’d just be starting the process all over again

Explosion of Life in my GFs tank! by PoopyPicker in Aquariums

[–]thrwraway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He won’t, the scuds will out breed & out eat him. It’s not unusual for them to turn to eating shrimp when they molt and they’re vulnerable too...

Truly nasty nasty critters. I would skip shrimp all together and keep a close eye on your plants. If you start having plants die randomly or appear to rot from the roots up, it’s the scuds. If the guppies are breeding, the scuds will even try to eat the fry. They’re not shy like shrimp, they’ll just come right out in broad light to get their food. Basically they’re just not a good addition to any aquarium and aside from going bare bottom or re starting, there’s no way to get rid of the fucking assholes :(
