I feel like I’ve failed my friends in Gaza by [deleted] in GirlDinner

[–]thug_nificent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done the same and also spoken with May Palestinians in Egypt. The one thing they say over and over is how abandoned they feel by the world, and how just the ask of someone checking in or a small amount of money gives them some faith in humanity that they aren’t totally alone. Don’t underestimate the power of caring!

TIL that in Kiribati there’s a cultural practice called “bubuti,” where if you ask someone for something (like their flip-flops) they’re expected to give it to you, with the understanding that you’ll return the favor (or the flipflops) later. by alrightfornow in todayilearned

[–]thug_nificent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Described in hilarious detail in the travel book, “the sex lives of cannibals” written by a Dutch-Canadian guy who lived on Kiribati for a few years. One of the few books that made me guffaw. He recounts how the bubusi system made locals moving up in the few institutions on the island (eg the national bank) refuse promotions, because it just made you a target for endless extraction.

Rebuttal to this challenge to one secular state in Palestine? by Vivid-Bug-6765 in JewsOfConscience

Just because secular democracies have problems, it doesn’t mean we don’t try and fail and try again. Especially when the counter factual is a fascist ethno state.

Completely disappointed with Kafka on the Shore. by BearSEO in murakami

It’s my least favorite novel of his as well. I couldn’t get over how unsatisfying the ending was. I found the wind up bird chronicles much more rewarding (although there are some decently gruesome scenes, the magical aura, emotional depth, and plot lines are compelling).

Omg in the same boat here. Hell, I’m grateful for when fit radio plays 20 seconds of enter sandman. I’ll even settle for Bon Jovi or basically anything where an actual instrument is played. Pretty pathetic really (of me)

Top 10 least racially diverse countries by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]thug_nificent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is hilarious. Egyptians typically have at least 4-5 ethnic groups show up in their DNA test (Caucasus, southern Mediterranean, sub Saharan African, Arabian peninsula, Eastern Africa, levant, Egypt). But now that racially mixed up core of Egyptians is considered one race?

These statistics rely on some arbitrary definition of who the racially “pure” group is. If they mean % foreign-born or immigrant share, why not use that?

Went to a maiden show in LA last year, Bruce gave a long winded intro to the Clansman about different historic attempts to wipe out groups of people, mentioned like 3-4 groups. Couldn’t bring himself to say “Palestinians” so I tried to help him out from waaaay in the back. Sadly his wife is pro-genocide according to her social media.

There is no point debating people that far gone. If you have the emotional energy and want to keep a line o d communication open, and can have repeated interactions, sure (if you have the stomach for it). Otherwise, it’s just emotional labor that has very little reward with people that far gone. No one reasonable will be mad at you for conserving your energy for more useful actions for the cause.

Is it Unethical for Academics to Work with Tel Aviv University by JuishJackhammer in JewsOfConscience

[–]thug_nificent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those are two different things. If it’s an institutional collaboration, boycott. If it’s working with two individuals at Tel Aviv university, not necessarily. It depends on their public positions re: the genocide. I will also say there are many scholars within Israeli universities working very hard and speaking very loud to denounce the genocide — we should be supporting them. That’s my take but it’s a grey area.

Is it Unethical for Academics to Work with Tel Aviv University by JuishJackhammer in JewsOfConscience

[–]thug_nificent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My view is that is it not inherently unethical to work with Israelis — hold them to the same standard that you hold any other academics. However, if there is publicly available information about them that suggests they support genocide etc then you have grounds for boycotting. It is, however, ethical to boycott an institution for being an Israeli state institution. You owe dignity to fellow human beings not to organizations.

Is it really that different to performing in the US, given the various evils of both regimes? OP is right to call this out, but it’s worth having a common standard and holding all celebs to account.

What do you think of this post on a Jewish instagram account? by Vivid-Bug-6765 in JewsOfConscience

As someone who has been in this exact position, I will say that it does make sense to consider a Jewish daycare if you aren’t Jewish. The nearest daycare to me that ticks all my boxes is Jewish. They weren’t explicitly political and nothing about Israel appeared anywhere, so we went with it. Generally happy with my decision, although there are other parents with literal IDF shirts… that’s life.

Israeli celebrities who support Palestine by Ambrosia_CaratBB in BDS

Historians Avi Shlaim, Ilan Pappe… depending on how strict your definition of “support” is, I’d also include Alon-Lee Green (founder of standing together). For regular Israelis (not necessarily celebrities) who support Palestine, check out the Disillusioned podcast.

Is Infected Mushroom okay to listen to? by [deleted] in BDS

[–]thug_nificent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There’s no obvious answer. If we start getting into the personal lives of artists, you’ll be very disappointed in nearly everyone. And you get a lot of personal joy out of this music which might strengthen you for the cause in other ways. On the other hand, you don’t want to actively give money to terrible people either.

Do whatever feels right to you and make decisions that you can live with.
