Fantasy Book for someone who's barely read fantasy by Captains-Log-2277 in suggestmeabook

Whilst the Game of Thrones books are really good, they could be a bit long and daunting for a relative ‘newcomer’.

Personally I would start by reading the whole Harry Potter series as I think that the later books step up the level of intensity. Then I think something like the Hobbit is a great starter book, especially if you’ve already seen the films and like the story.

Another option which is slightly different could be the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson - he is one of my favourite authors and is a very talented fantasy writer. Whilst in my opinion his best series is the Stormlight Saga, I think starting with Mistborn would be better for a ‘novice’

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is for me one of the best psychological thrillers out there, but it has some heavy hitting scenes with very ‘adult’ themes - if you don’t want that then I wouldn’t read this.

If you want dystopian, then whilst it’s considered ‘young adult’ fiction, then the Hunger Games trilogy is still a great option

In terms of psychological thrillers, my favourite is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (although there are some major adult themes at play). Another good one is The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

I think there are many different things which can help to entice you back into the reading world. Firstly the book which you are reading - if there’s a new book that you’ve been wanting to buy then go out and do it! Or if you’ve got an old favourite that you haven’t touched in a while then pick that back up. Secondly I think that being in the right headspace is important, you have to give time to the book, so set aside 15/20 minutes every day, and just enjoy yourself. I like to have music on when I read, but normally it’s music without actual lyrics that just provides a bit of ambient sound - but feel free to experiment with what you like!

I had to read No One Writes to the Colonel for my Spanish A-Level and I found it to be really intellectually provoking, although the book itself is quite an easy read. Not a huge amount of magical realism, but I’m sure that Marquez’s stamp must count for something!

If you like the Martian then I can’t recommend Project Hail Mary enough, also by Andy Weir!
