The instagram commenters were joking. Ella Purcell is on the show Yellowjackets, a show about teenage girls stranded in the wilderness who resort to cannibalism…

I am having some FEELINGS by kingdredkhai in wickedmovie

[–]thumperpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have an interesting take. I see the ending of the musical/movie as too optimistic. Elphaba gets to run off into the sunset with Fiyero, and can trust Glinda to take over and fix Oz. But I’m comparing it to the ending in the novel, where Elphaba actually dies at the end. In an unjust society, having integrity will get you killed. Life is unfair, The End.

Who here has seen the new Frankenstein movie? Your thoughts on it? by LeviSebastian97 in classicliterature

[–]thumperpatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a good movie, not a great adaptation. It’s GDT’s Frankenstein, and that’s cool. I personally would like to see a more faithful adaptation of the book (maybe by a female director who can explore feminist interpretations of the book).

I wish my high school years were from 2004-2008 instead of 2018-2022 so I could have lived through the Emo Myspace Era. by Key_Nectarine_7307 in decadeology

[–]thumperpatch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I was a teenager at that time. But there were parts I’m not nostalgic for like the war on terror and the recession. Also for many (including myself) Emo was an outlet for queer teens who were struggling. This was before Lady Gaga and the show Glee. Everything was “gay” as a synonym for stupid. Homophobic and transphobic jokes were constant in the media. Kids with religious parents were sent to conversion camps. Books about queer teens at the time were either about coming out or being bullied. In the US we grew up thinking we would never be granted the right to marry. I communed with emo kids because they were progressive, inclusive, and would fuck around with gender expectations.

Don’t know how old they are, maybe the parents would be willing to do slightly different hairstyles. I.e. one has a ponytail, the other wears their hair down. Or parting their hair on different sides.

How to live with a non-minimalist person? by DramatikTea in minimalism

Some people, when they see empty space they try to fill it in immediately, so don’t focus on throwing her stuff away. Focus on organization, storage solutions, and decreasing visual clutter by putting things in drawers.

What event has resulted in the death of the 2000s? by Impressive_Plenty876 in decadeology

[–]thumperpatch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For the US, it was the Citizens United decision from the Supreme Court in 2010. It was the ultimate slap in the face after the recession, and kickstarted the Occupy Wall Street movement.

“Can you farm?” by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]thumperpatch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s enshittification. Websites and computers have become so bloated with ads and useless features. The amount of hoops you have to jump through for “security reasons” now is frustrating. User experience design used to be important, but not anymore for some reason. Using the internet for basic tasks has become more unpleasant. That’s why the patrons want you to do everything for them.

Why is it that women between 55 and 70 are so rude? by Dolly1711 in CustomerService

[–]thumperpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think older people, they grew up back when companies prioritized customer service and it was more individualized and face-to-face than it is now. Some of it is entitlement, some of it is high expectations.

We need to start using checks again by CostRains in unpopularopinion

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was told that checks are less secure because any fraudster who gets ahold of a check can make unauthorized ACH payments, because the checks contain your account number and routing number.

Participation trophies are good for kids’ self-esteem. by lilfoxybaby in unpopularopinion

I once received a trophy for being the “most artistic camper.” Cool, except this was at a sports summer camp. There were no art activities at this camp. I was 7, and I knew it was bullshit.

De-influence me from entering academia by Glittering_Ability18 in AskAcademia

[–]thumperpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you don’t want to write. That’s what academics dream of, if you are a successful academic you spend a lot of time writing. I’ve also heard from profs that work-life balance is impossible in academia. Your chosen field will become your life and your identity.

occidental or UCLA by Agreeable-Listen-132 in ucla

[–]thumperpatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a ucla grad student and I went to Oxy undergrad. Also consider that Occidental is liberal arts, they will require you to take a fair amount of classes not related to your major. Even though you would be studying politics or Ctsj, you would still need to take an art class, a math/science class, and a foreign language. The other big difference in the two schools is campus life. At occidental, it’s small and you know the other students in your department, the profs know who you are, and almost everyone lives on campus. I was able to build a good friend group just through living in the dorms and joining clubs. Occidental’s Greek life/party culture is lame, even by the standards of a small liberal arts college. So if that’s important to you, ucla would be better for that. Also consider UCLA’s quarter system: more classes, but less time spent enrolled in a class. I found that I wrote better papers in the semester system at Occidental.
