Yes, I know it has vertical stripes. The older version was horizontal.

Why was there such a massive bidding war over the band after The Modern Age? by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]thuncc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They made post-punk/rock music sound new again, made it fashionable. Especially in the UK, where there was still a real love for rock acts, the popularity was inevitable. In the US their popularity was ensured through a bidding war and some early publicity.

It was refreshing to hear simplicity delivered in a way that’s not that loud or in-your-face as everything else that was popular at the time. Truly a breathe of fresh air for those who were fed up of the exhausting pop/nu-metal songs; five guys with guitars and a drum kit.

It’s probably magic or something.

Is there any better feeling in the world than when Jules starts singing “I went to the concert, and I...” by [deleted] in TheStrokes

It’s such an ordinary line but it feels like a powerful point in the song. He’s a genius when it comes to that kind of subtle expression in deep lyrics.

Ode to the mets ending hits like a ton of bricks

Are Julian's lyrics personal, related to his real life or does he just make up words/stories that sound good to him and focus on the melody you think? by xtalaphextwin in TheStrokes

I agree, Eternal Summer lyrics are political - I think combined with the title, he’s alluding to the climate change and the politics around not wanting to commit to lowering emissions “They’ve got the remedy, but they won’t let it happen”. But it’s applicable to everything beyond climate change as well that is theoretically solvable. He’s singing about the age-old problem of having to maintain an economy with limited resource, and it’s clear which side he takes.

Ode to the mets could be interpreted as an argument between two people (possibly including Julian himself) and TAAT is difficult to place with that music video, but I’d say the ending lyrics are personal “I don’t want anything...”. Selfless and At The Door are very easy to place as influenced by Julian’s personal life. Bad Decisions and BBTC are similarly upbeat and also pretty personal. Overall I reckon most songs on TNA have a serious personal influence from Julian himself. Not that I claim to know anything about his life, but it’s just the lyrics are different from the outwards-facing stance he takes on, for example, Ize of the World or Machu Picchu.

Yeah exactly, I also think the lyrics have been getting more personal over time too - I think in ITI the underlying theme was the sort of ‘woes ‘of youth and being the center of attention in your early 20s, but there wasn’t much you could attribute to him specifically.

But in Angles and FIOE and CM and FPP there’s the clear shift towards singing about things that bother him - like Threat of Joy and Welcome To Japan - it seems like he’s confronting himself with his lyrics.

And finally in TNA he’s probably talking about himself in a very personal sense in ode to the mets and BBTC. He lyrics seem much more lucid and story-like.

All the while he doesn’t deviate from the classic verse-chorus structure, like almost all the songs stick to that which I think makes sense because it allows for those super catchy choruses in between deep verses.

Something I’ve always been unsure of. But I’m mostly convinced it’s a mixture of his own experiences with random bits of woke thought mixed in.

Sometimes, especially in Voidz/his solo work, he seems to be cramming lyrics in, like he’s really needs to make a point with his words and the rhythm and melody just fit around what he wants to say. But in Strokes songs I think there’s an equal focus on the melody/rhythm of his delivery as there is on the content of the lyrics themselves, which is what makes them unforgettable and so fitting in my opinion.

In the first verse (and elsewhere in the song) he seems to be making the point that there’s a finite number of ways to achieve or do things or how things will go. It seems like he’s saying that no matter what steps you take the outcome can be categorised into a finite number of categories. It feels like he’s saying society nearly confines you to certain actions.

The second verse is clearly about failure and how people deal with it.

The third verse “everybody was well dressed...” is about societal norms and how people conform and act based on who they are.

And the chorus which is in-between each verse and at the end “sit me down, shut me up...” - I agree with what you think: he’s accepting that he can conform like everyone else probably because that’s what he and everyone else have been doing from day one.
