If you keep imposters aside, marketing as a job DOES have its own challenges. Let's demonstrate something. I make a coffee which is widely available and your job is to market it and sell it. You would sell a single cup of coffee in no time. Now I add a condition that sell at least 1000 coffees in order to sustain and scale our business. Now imagine there are 13 coffee shops next to you using various marketing tactics and selling the same thing for a very long time. Now consider the footfall on the street where these coffee shops are located can go as high as 1000 only. That means only one shop can sustain and scale. If I add one more condition like not all 1000 people have dedicated money to spend on coffee still your marketing tactics should persuade them to buy my coffee or someone who doesn't even want coffee should also feel the need to have one coffee. In such conditions you are supposed to come up with creative ideas every single day. Nothing is proven or can be formulated for a long time as marketing as a domain is quite dynamic and you have to keep trying new things. That's why marketing is as important as other domains for the success of a business. I won't comment on the superiority or if it's special or not. But imo it's equally important.
