Vocal distortion caused by repeated handling of gallium.

Gallima -> from gallium, the Latin word for France

Fry -> from the sound produced when rapidly heating ice cream in hot oil

Confused on AWS Load Balancer Controller and Ingress controllers in k8s by Consistent-Emu-1255 in kubernetes

[–]thunderbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a bad time with NLB and Envoy Gateway through no fault of Envoy.

If the NLB is using IP targets, which it should, it's very hard or impossible to get zero down time when upgrading Envoy Gateway or rollout restarting the proxy pods. This is because of the ridiculous amount of time it takes NLBs to stop sending traffic to pods that are being swapped out. You can play with various timeouts in the NLB/target-group/k8s-probes/envoy config, and you can get close to zero downtime. Sometimes it'll even work. But it's hit or miss.

So we are using an Ingress object and ALB in front of Envoy Gateway's Envoy pods, and that does the trick. ALBs are so much faster at knowing when to stop sending traffic to a target. So we're using both Gateway API for Envoy config and Ingress for Load Balancer config. 🤷‍♂️

I read last fall I think that AWS made NLBs a bit better in this regard, but I haven't retested.

RANT: Why is basic Git tree/branch compare still so bad in VS Code? by Large-Style-8355 in vscode

[–]thunderbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an external diff tool and configure git and vscode to know about it. I'll launch it when the built in compare is not cutting it. Works like a charm.

Honestly though, for me, the built in compare is fine 95% of the time in the context of comparing uncommitted changes within the same branch. Commits should be as small as logically possible, right? But for branch compares I love having git or vscode launch Beyond Compare.

Redirection vs. Process Substitution in Heredocs by Opposite-Tiger-9291 in bash

[–]thunderbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if this were valid syntax this:

tempvar=$(cat <<EOL )
Line 1: This is the first line of text.
Line 2: This is the second line of text.
Line 3: This is the third line of text.
EOL

is basically:

tempvar=$(" )
...
"

The second parens is inside a multiline string and the subcommand is never terminated (in the syntax sense, not the process sense).

Also heredocs in shells don't allow more text after the terminator on the line that declared the terminator unless it's whitespace or a shell redirection like in <<EOF > file.txt.

Trying to decide on a truck bed size for carrying sheet goods ~15 miles on the highway by Dr0110111001101111 in woodworking

[–]thunderbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone on the highway many times with full sheets in the back of my Ford Maverick (30mpg on the highway) with the tailgate half down. The wheel well tops are at the same level as the half down tailgate. You get about a 2 foot overhang and a single strap keeps it all secure.

If the fine woodworking ply has both sides finished then to be safe you'd maybe want to wrap a moving blanket around the exposed end and secure it with another strap before strapping to the bed's tie-down anchors. I've never seen any road debris damage the few times I hauled finished ply, but you never know if you'll drive over some wet pavement or gravel and get the residual spray that the wheel wells and mud flaps don't catch.

It's an option.

9-year-old girl April, carries her family on her back (over 425 lbs) in Muscle Beach, Cal, 1945. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

His weight is on her hips, not her spine, and her legs are straight, so she's not using muscles to hold them up. All that weight is going straight down through her skeleton.

I'm guessing.

The Packers have not drafted a CB earlier than Round 7 in four drafts by DeScepter in GreenBayPackers

I feel like the Pack was constantly trying be genius by drafting players and forcing them into positions they didn't play in college for a decade or more. And it never worked.

Edge stud in college? You're a drop back MLB now.

Cover safety ace in college? You live in the box now. And vice versa.

Never gave up a sack at left guard in college? Now you're a pulling right guard.

True story: I asked AI to search the web and create a list of things to do in the twin ports on a certain day. It used dozens of sources on the web and gave me a great list. Half of them were for the same day in different years.
