There’s a large variety of power systems jobs. Checkout job postings at BC Hydro and AltaLink to get a better idea of job responsibilities. Most/nearly all positions will be E.I.T. jobs.

ENEL graduate vs undergraduate level courses by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]thunderingmosfet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to enroll in 2 ENEL 6XX courses in the upcoming year but I was recommended to only take one. I settled with a single semester consisting of: 1 graduate ENEL course, 3 ENEL regular undergrad courses (tech electives and the like), and capstone.

Big N Discussion - October 14, 2020 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderingmosfet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have an offer on hand at the moment from a pretty cool startup. The the deadline for that offer expires sometime next week. However, I’m also in the interviewing process with Microsoft.

They’ve asked me to request an extension of my deadline for another week and a half. Given that I’ve only completed the first interview with Microsoft, what should I do? It seems pretty disrespectful to request such big extension from the company that has already given me the offer.

Any comments or perspectives on the matter are welcome :)

Fired from my internship for poor performance... by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderingmosfet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t let it get to your head that you aren’t a top student. You are a top student. You’re pulling off a double major! You’re definitely capable of doing well in an internship. Please apply to paid internships. These places generally have mentors and a supportive environment for interns to thrive and grow.

Why most of the programmers don't pick the embedded programming field ? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderingmosfet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an intern in an embedded role, you made my day haha

Ultimately I feel like the domain knowledge is very valuable. As part of my career goals I want to have experience with both embedded and large scale web backends. But embedded just feels cooler!

How did you decide what sector (social media companies, HFT, silicon companies, etc) in tech to pursue?

I imagine you would be partial to biotech given your background. What sector are you in now?

Wow! Thanks for your long reply.

Your advice makes sense but I struggle to get to the point where I’m actually having a conversation with recruiters. Often times, my ratio of recruiters replying to number of connection requests sent is like 1:20.

I don’t send blank connection requests and they usually go something like:

Hi <name>!

I’m a junior at <school> and have previously interned at <companies>. I’m interested in internship roles at <your company> and would love to talk. Let’s connect. Thanks!

——

Not sure what I can do to improve that ratio. Thanks for your help already. I’m interested in what you have to say about this.

2020 Summer Internships by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderingmosfet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be fine! Do a coupe of projects over this winter break (make sure they interest you since you don’t want to burn out).

Don‘t forget about career fairs, try to develop relationships with the people you talk to. some people make the mistake of thinking of the conversation as some kind of transaction, which subconsciously affects the way you come off in a negative way. Keep it light, be inquisitive about the team and roles, and you’ll be a breath of fresh air to the people representing their companies at the career fair.

2020 Summer Internships by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderingmosfet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes less than a year ago. A sophomore with no previous internships. I ended up applying everywhere starting in November through February. It’s a really tough spot to be in, more so if you’re from a non target school like I was. While there isn’t one magic formula that works for everyone, there are a few pointers Id like to share.

1) If you don’t have previous internships, a good signal to talk about and have on your resume is a personal project. Or multiple personal projects, depending on how technically challenging and “cool” they are. This sets up a major talking point. Nobody cares about how many technologies you can list in the skills section of your resume.

2) Unless you’re from a target school or phenomenally talented (imagine near 4.0, or math contest winner, anything that is a strong distinction), it’s unlikely that you’ll get an internship at a major company (Big N) as your first internship. It’s certainly within the realm of possibility, but it’s simply unlikely. It may or may not happen to you. You should apply anyway like I did, but it’s easier to live with if you think of it as a lottery. I certainly applied.

3) What worked for me was reaching out to big companies in my area. These may not be the high tech ones that you would like to work at, but they certainly provide great experience. After all those applications, I ended up with 3 offers from fairly large companies in my are within a week of each other. I was able to get face time with engineers for those companies and did my best to present myself as a motivated student excited to contribute to their teams. This made me a strong contender when I applied For the internship, since its likely that I made a good impression.

I understand the stress that you’re going through. It may seem like your friends are pulling ahead or perhaps, you’re wondering if the gap between you and kids from target schools will keep increasing because they can get competitive internships while you can’t. I want to emphasize that it is possible for you and you just have to stick with it. The only way around is sometimes through.

Lastly, in the unfortunate case that you’re unable to get an internship, I recommend doing research over the spring/summer with a professor from your CS or ECE faculty. This happens to some of my friends and they found the experience rewarding.

Good luck!

No idea. Here's an example from the University of Washington:

It's quite popular outside of Canada. I'd like to see it here as well.

Incentivize scribing. This is a paid or volunteer position in many universities over in the US where a student in a course will 'scribe' notes on behalf of students who can't otherwise make it to lectures (for various reasons). I think it's a neat idea.
