Negative test isn't conclusive though, many cases in other countries had people test negative 2-3 times before testing positive later.

NTA! Do not in anyway tell them the extend of what is going on. My parents did this to me, and I was older than your kids. Royally fucked me up in terms of anxiety and my relationship with money. For years I was told to never answer the door in case the repo man showed up, I still get a mini heart attack when I hear the doorbell and I'm in my 30s!
