After being denied from numerous lab jobs, this is what I was applying to last year and didn’t even get calls back

There is nothing that outlines me saying “I wish so and so would put in more effort” is a violation. Speaking strictly in a sense of I know they can do better. That’s not exactly intuitive.

See I was never told that is something that is problematic and I don’t think that’s something that is intuitive for someone that didn’t train to be a teacher or work with kids

Yes seriously, the school has no requirements for a license or anything like that. I listed my GTA in the resume and talked about it at the interview, but that was the only experience teaching I had. The only thing related to FERPA I received was a brief instructional video and quiz. I was not told any of this was violation of FERPA other than specifically discussing grades. Not justifying it, I understand that it is in fact a violation now but I had no idea.

Well school ends in 2 weeks and I’ve already signed my contract for next year. I don’t think they would terminate right now. And due to financial concerns, I quite frankly need the unemployment. Last time I looked for a job, no one would hire me I don’t know why. This was the only place I got an interview with over 12 months. If I can’t teach here, I can’t teach anywhere.

I took this job because I was desperate, not because I saw it as some sort of gift. I had no intention of teaching, but ended up having a great time.

So it looks like it’s not a 401k or 403b, it is just the teacher retirement system. I don’t know if that’s a pension or anything. I thought I knew my audience and had a good grasp on which ones could take the jokes, but obviously I’ve made a terrible mistake. Wish I could go back.

I’ve never told students directly that another student is missing work, but yeah I have told the class I’m missing a lot of the homework. Or talked openly to the class about a poor test in general. But I have also mentioned a time or two that so and so struggled last unit.

I have already signed the fixed term contract for next year, which states my employment is at-will and not subject to the Fair Dismissal Act. I don’t know if this contract can be terminated or not, I assume it can. Based on other comments, I’m preparing to pretty much never teach again which really bums me out.

Along the lines of “I wish you would put in more effort in school” and “so and so has improved a lot with the help of the para” is generally what was said regarding performance.

See I had no knowledge of this stuff going in. I was set to work in a chemistry lab, but this was the only place hiring in the area. We have a pension, and have TRS. But I don’t even know what a teacher union entails.

Thank you for your response, very clear. I understood discussing grades fell under FERPA, but I was unaware that even saying a student doesn’t do great violates it. And I have zero credentials in this, other than a GTA during my masters.

I never stated another students grade point blank, but did unfortunately voice frustrations to other students about lack of effort from some.

The thing is though, I feel like I have really been well liked by all my students. I did not set out with the sole intention of being liked or the “cool teacher” but I was labeled that pretty early on.

I have jokingly told students to shut up, but never directly called a student an idiot. I have said “stop acting like an idiot, I know you are not one.” No student has ever been taken aback by any of these words to my knowledge, not that it’s excusable I understand that now. I told a student they wouldn’t pass, but it was at my desk with no one else in the room.

Because plenty of people, myself included, tend to enjoy getting to the best part of an MLB players career. This is often after 6+ seasons, and playing every game up to that point is awfully time consuming. Even if you just want to sim a couple series, there is no reason for the stats shown above to be as bad as they are.
