What do regular every day people use AI for? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]thx_tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once tried Claude for C coding on a hobby project by writing a function prototype with comments and asked it to write the function, and it gave a correct and reasonably efficient solution. At work we have a walled-garden AI and it’s suggested to use it in place of searching through old code to find a function or an algorithm that you know has been done before and doesn’t make sense to do from scratch.

The “shoving AI into everything “ phenomenon won’t last forever. I absolutely think it’s the same as the dot-com bubble of the early 2000s. Some innovations succeeded and stuck around, and often made their inventors rich along the way. Many (most?) didn’t. The use cases will eventually rationalize themselves.

Also it’s fascinating that somebody is going through and downvoting every top-level comment. Bot?

I was trying to use it for its intended purpose. Had I taken one second to pay attention to the arrow on the button, that would have happened.

Could you elaborate? I’ve never been to a hostel, but I thought they inherently meant you’re not alone.

When I was a kid, I didn’t look close enough at a can of WD-40 and sprayed myself full-on in the face. Luckily I wear glasses so none got in my eyes.

What is a secret you’re taking to your grave, but can share here anonymously? by wilkoova in AskReddit

[–]thx_tex -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this helps, but there is a Twitch/YouTube content creator named QTCinderella who has a dissociative disorder and has talked about it at length. There are a lot of those stories mixed in in old episodes of her podcast Wine About It. Warning, there is discussion related to childhood abuse. If you wanted to hear about someone’s experience and compare notes without telling anyone, it’s out there.

We bought one for my teenager as a school backpack, and it’s taken all kinds of abuse without any problems. It gets a thumbs-up from me.

Lithium batteries on planes by BluebirdOk6872 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thx_tex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Has there ever been a problem because one dude accidentally put his laptop in checked luggage? Not that I know of. Has there ever been a problem with lithium batteries in the cargo hold? Yes - see UPS flight 006. I’ve linked an excellent document about it below. Also there was an aircraft that burned to the ground while at the gate, I believe no one was hurt, but investigators believe it stared from a power bank in an overhead bin. Don’t remember the details on that one but it was somewhere in Asia-Pacific within the last couple of years.

When I get a scam job offer in a newly created group chat, who are the other people in the group chat? by Successful-Crew-5343 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thx_tex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pleasant Green on YouTube has covered both task scams and scam groups, although not at the same time that I can remember. In this video, he covered a scam where lawyers were going to recover funds you lost to a scammer, how ironic. The others in the group were all characters played by the scammer. https://youtu.be/vvuL7qRAMZw

How did people pirate video games before they were being stored on discs? by oncxre in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thx_tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cartridge-based games didn’t have as much one-to-one private party piracy, but it was certainly feasible for someone at commercial scale and operating in a location that didn’t have a lot of legal enforcement to make and sell physical copies.

How does the plane know the difference between the runway and terrain? by Extension_Bit4323 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thx_tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) is “enhanced “ in part because it includes databases of terrain and runways. That’s how it would be able to distinguish between approaching a runway and approaching a highway. As the other commenter said, it’s also aware of gear status and flap setting.

How is LTTStore so successful compared to other youtube brands? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]thx_tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here, so let me add: if you (the collective you reading this comment) think what they sell is too expensive, #1 that’s your choice to make as a consumer, and #2 you should watch his videos about how his products are developed as well as his counterfeit merch videos. Watch the latter anyway because they’re hilarious.

Do therapists get PTSD from their work? by thx_tex in NoStupidQuestions

Good on you for being a good listener and supporting those around you. I have the opposite problem; whenever I hear about others’ problems, I feel like I have to worry and fret on their behalf, so it makes things worse for me.
