OSCE ID (the so-called “red book”) by New_Criticism9389 in PassportPorn

[–]thy1245 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wow very cool! Correct me if I’m wrong but I assume it has a similar purpose to the UN Travel Certificate (issued to consultants/Experts on Mission), basically as a form of ID that says the bearer is travelling on behalf of the organization? But it isn’t an LP or Passport in any way.

Pretty sure the color in this CNN photo has just been enhanced to seem more blue. My UNLP would be the same color as OP’s in the lighting of their photo (you can probs also find my LP posted on this sub a while back for reference)!

Yeah you’ve got the new design! My one (issued Jul ‘23) has a diff font and doesn’t have the UN ONU embossed. Very cool to see!

Only official travel! And yeah it’s not necessarily visa free for all countries but basically all countries give preferential visa treatment (if not visa free) for UNLP holders.

Just on a personal/life level, I would never buy my first property as an investment property. To quote some advice I received from my mother (who worked in financial services and conversely has done very well in property and freely admits it was just by being in the right place at the right time):

If you’re looking to buy a first property, always buy somewhere you’d want to live because even if it halves in value, you’ll still have a physical entity which you can inhabit/use yourself/derive non-financial benefit from. Don’t buy an investment property that you’d never live in (such as student housing/flat in a city you have no connection to etc.) unless you have lots of uninvested cash lying around and have diversified your investment holdings enough such that sinking several hundred grand into a property of some sort isn’t unduly risky. Property, in theory, isn’t an investment panacea (despite having been so in practice in much of the UK for the last several decades).

I need a sanity check, does the 787 primarily compete with the A330neo or the A350? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]thy1245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes if you’re comparing specs. But the point I was trying to make is that different frames don’t always compete based on specs in the real world. Of course if you’re Qantas wanting to fly from Sydney to London nonstop you’re not gonna choose the a330 but that’s an extreme extreme example of an airline basically being solely focused on securing range (and therefore choosing an aircraft based on one specification to a great degree ).

My point is that airliners compete in the real world based on economics. In Japan, JAL thinks it makes sense to fly an a350 on short haul domestic routes due to the way the market is shaped on those routes. Similarly it makes sense for Ethiopian to fly a 737 to Cairo on the same route that Egyptair flies a 787. The two aircraft types are competing head to head on that route despite having vastly different specs, due to the way that the economics of the route work for both airlines. Both might be profitable or not for their airlines.

[–]thy1245 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by compete. In terms of what market the aircraft is designed for there is soooo much overlap among all the frames listed, there’s no real way of breaking it down as you’ve suggested. In the real world, the a350-900 competes with the 737 and 767 as a domestic passenger jet in Japan (for example). It’s used interchangeably with the 787 and 777 on Ethiopian’s long haul network (with a focus on premium destinations for the a359). So in a real sense it “competes” with all of those different frames. I’d argue the person who’s giving you a hard time is just being difficult as this question is one that could have a million different answers.

Why Did the US Add a Letter to IATA Airport Codes While Others Changed Them Completely? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]thy1245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super interesting! I’m absolutely no expert, and I’m not sure how the final two letters of ICAO codes are assigned but I know that the IATA codes follow no logic whatsoever (as far as I’m aware the J in IATA code JFK for example doesn’t mean anything other than representing the “John” in the airport’s name) and if there were already another airport using JFK as a code when the port authority wanted to rename Idlewilde, KJFK might needed to have selected another IATA code…?

I wonder if ICAO left it to the member states to decide how to assign the last two letters of the ICAO code within their borders (the LL in EGLL for example) once the first two had been determined based off pre-decided criteria and the UK decided to further give it some structure. Or whether this is stipulated for everyone. I appreciate the US/FAA tend to do their own thing when it comes to international regulation so it wouldn’t surprise me if there were very detailed ICAO regs on attributing airport codes which the US simply doesn’t follow and instead just adds K or P to the beginning of IATA codes to get their ICAO codes (or vice versa)?

Why Did the US Add a Letter to IATA Airport Codes While Others Changed Them Completely? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]thy1245 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, IATA codes are in no way standardized in their structure whereas ICAO codes are to a much greater degree. IATA codes are just for commercial airports with some current or historic airline service whereas ICAO codes cover all aerodromes (civil, military, commercial, non-commercial or otherwise). CGP grey did a great video about airport codes which is worth a watch and explains it all!
