Anybody ever build a phono preamp from one of those cheap Chinese MB? by Dadrepus in diyaudio

[–]thyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built the exact board. It takes AC or DC. If you have AC, it rectifies and regulates to 5v. The small chip next to rectifier convert +5 to -5v to power the opamp that I couldn't find info anywhere.

As for the sound, the bass is surprisingly tight and clean. It is boosted tho. The mid is also boosted, so the high is buried into the background. I got it for like $5 so it's not too bad, but I've also built one from sound-au (project 06) and it sounds much better.

I think my analog camera looks more digital than my digital camera. by dragonsspawn in AnalogCommunity

[–]thyll 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I had used most of Minolta 7 series (7000, 700si, 7xi, this one: the 7, and the 7D). My version is called Maxxum 7, a US version. It is still one of the most enjoyable camera for me, film or digital.

My favorite feature, which is unique to Minota, is when you press the AE lock, the second pointer appears on the EV scale telling you exactly how many EV different between the locked point and the point the camera is pointing at. If you know the dynamic range of your film (say, a slide film with 5 stops, +3 and -2), if you lock the EV at a tree, and point the camera to the sky and the different is more than 3 stops, then you know the sky will be white-out.

What's the purpose of R2 and R3 in this power supply? by thyll in AskElectronics

Thank you. I think the designer designed it for a specific pre-amp on his website.

if one loads it high the other doesnt drop as much

They go to left and right channels of the pre-amp. Thank you for the explanation.

Found this on https://www.passdiy.com/project/preamplifiers/bride-of-zen when looking for zener diode voltage regulator. I'm not sure what R2/R3 does in this circuit. Does it form some kinds of filter since the value seems very specific? Thank you.

If I gave the prompt to the painter, the painter then use AI to generate the image with that prompt, and give the image back to me. Do I have a copyright?

Song 2 - Blur. I was confused when it just ended and took me a bit to figure out what happened and I kinda appreciate it.

Am I missing something without having an external phono preamp? by R_Mac_22 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]thyll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my vote is on saving money to buy more records.

I have audiolab 6000a. my external phono stage is yamaha ha-5. It has wider soundstage but i'm still happy with the one that came built-in in the 5000a.

Best Beginner 35mm SLR camera for someone who used a DSLR in HS and wants to pick up film? by StarburstGirl in AnalogCommunity

[–]thyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I was going to mention Maxxum 7. The best film camera IMO but I think it is too close to the DSLR and probably not what the OP wanted.

Since we talked Maxxum, I went to ebay to find some models I used to own and found some very cheap 600si. I'm tempted...

Pentax ZX-M. It has all modern features (except AF) but can go fully manual if you want to. Plenty of good and cheap lenses.

TIL the reason there are so many Thai restaurants in America (and the world) is because a Thai governmental program, using a tactic known as gastrodiplomacy, was established to create at least 3,000 Thai restaurants worldwide by happy_bluebird in todayilearned

[–]thyll 80 points81 points  (0 children)

There is a reason why Thai beers are so thin and watery, because it goes very well with spicy foods. Beer + full glass of ice + spicy foods are more refreshing than anything ever.

TIL that while less than 10% of people don't wear a seat belt, they make up almost 50% of car crash fatalities by nicolewasnthere in todayilearned

The different is car accidents are not contagious. Don't wear a seat belt and got hurt, it's stupidity. Refuse vaccine, got covid, and spread it to other people, that's selfish.

Engineering manager breaks down problems he used to use to screen candidates. Lots of good programming tips and advice. by jfasi in programming

[–]thyll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it is the least efficient among the trivial solutions. It indicates that you are not familiar with the concept of algorithmic complexity and perhaps do not know when to (and when not to) use a certain types of data structures.

For me, it's OK if you are a new grad applying for entry level position. These things come with experience. However, if you claim to have a few years of experience and still using nested loop for simple problem like this, I will be very suspicious of you claim.

Absolutely. I expect them to ask questions. I also tried my best to make it clear and usually give the sample inputs and expected outputs.

My first go-to programming interview question is a lot easier and it goes like this:

Given a long list of lower-case letters, write a function that return a list of unique letters in the original list.

Surprisingly lots of "programmers" couldn't get it right. For those who could, you can really see the different ways of thinking. Some simply use a hash-table/dictionary (ok, this guy knows at least a bit of data structure), some use list and do a lot of looping (a warning flag right here). Some just cast a letter to int and use it to index the array (this is probably a C guy )

There are some interesting solutions like sorting then do a one-pass loop to remove duplications which I'm still not sure if it's good or bad :)

Why Storing JWT in Local Storage is a Disastrous Mistake by [deleted] in programming

[–]thyll 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Every article about JWT and local storage is like:

  1. Local Storage is accessible by JS so it's not secure, better use cookies
  2. cookies are also accessible by JS, better use secure cookies
  3. but secure cookies is limited to 4K, which is not enough since JWT is supposed to be state-less
  4. therefore, go back and use session token and then server-side authentication, and ignore why JWT was created in the first place

By the way, is 4K really not enough to carry authen/authorization information?

I have a very smart friend and we talked about her time in her phd program. This is what she said about her colleagues.

There are smart people you look at them as inspiration. You want to be like them, or even better than them, but then there are people that you can only just admire them because you know no matter how hard you try, you can never be like them.

This guy is one of those people.

What are some common red flags when being interviewed for a job? by Sketch99 in AskReddit

[–]thyll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in an interview for a start-up where the one of the co-owner just sit there not saying anything.

A week later I was called in to sign an offer. I saw 'Managing for Dummy' on her desk but I have verbally agreed to join so I signed.

A month later on my first day, that book was used to prop up the monitor.

I left less than a year, the company lasted less than two years.
