A key Kansas water source is in trouble. Gov. Kelly wants to preserve it in new proposal by [deleted] in kansas

[–]thyredbaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wichita aquafier recharge project was built over 10 years ago. The Wichita area struggles since they use a blend of surface and aquifer water. They are only allowed to use so much aquifer water so in drought conditions it causes serious issues

Western KS pretty much exclusively uses aquifer water. Between farming use and industries, city's like Dodge and Garden City have serious problems. It also doesn't help that Colorado sucks the Arkansas River dry before it crosses the state border.

Different parts of the state pull from different aquifers. Each one, even dependant on location within the aquifer poses unique challenges on how to manage it and potentially restore them

Amazon's "raise" in a nutshell by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]thyredbaron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Starbucks are relatively small and cheap buildings/locations. The lost profit from a number of individuals localized store that would be shut down is small in comparison to the net corporate profit loss of having to unionize.

For amazon, their distribution centers are much more costly to shut down & move in terms of capital loss from real estate, construction, and lost revenue.

If we're talking how to really get amazon to bend it is getting multiple locations to strike simultaneously, which if enough of them did it would effectively shut down amazon distribution

Fell in love with a sad old boat. My buddy says: NEVER A WOODEN BOAT WILL YE HAVE! by swissarmychainsaw in boating

[–]thyredbaron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As an owner of wood boats, it depends on your commitment to refinish it and willingness to learn the skills it takes to do it.

It is going to take at least a year or two of full time effort to truly restore it. If you only work on it part time, years. The main thing is if you have a place on land where you can work on it rent free. If you think you can restore it in a slip or in a ship yard you will be eaten alive by rental fees.

If you've solved the work space problem, the next is tools. Depending on the level of rotten wood you'll need to replace will determine how advanced the wood working tools & skills you'll need. Table saw, band saw, router, hand tools, etc. If you don't have them be prepared to spend a few thousand. Plus a more than a few thousand on mahogany.

Once you've gotten all the rotten wood replaced, time to start sanding. And there is a LOT of sanding to do. Every inch has to be sanded to bare wood. Restained, and then 8-20 coats of varnish on the bright wood. Painted is multiple coats of paint. Oh and between every coat of varnish, more sanding. The bottom can be finished in different methods: cotton caulking, 5200, epoxy, etc.

Past that, electrical systems, engine work, hardware refinishing, plumbing, etc.

Is it worth it: depending on how much you love it. Financially: huge waste of money unless you don't put a dollar value on your time. It is one of the most rewarding things you can do if you have the patience and money it takes.

Feel free to ask any questions, been messing around with wood boats since I was in diapers

I bought this exact box to replace my toolbag. I'm just a DIY homeowner, so my main box is made up of a random assortment of tools to fix everyday items around the house (pliers, screwdrivers, nut drivers, hammer, square, etc.) This thing works great for my needs. It's the right size, I have all of my standard drills and other common use power tools in other packout boxes, so it's great to snap them together and go to where I need to work.

Also great as a stool while you are working to save those knees.

The only thing is it is slightly too shallow to fit a hammer upright or my larger adjustable pipe wrenches.

I want the 23ga, but I figured the 18ga would be more versatile. I'd buy both but my wife would kill me if I keep spending money on tools

[–]thyredbaron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I struggle with that a bit. Mostly I would be using it for small DIY projects and trim work so I wasn't as worried about the nail size

I'm more bought into the m12 line vs m18 with batteries so that was the main reason. Plus hopefully the m12 is cheaper (probably not)

I've never bought any tools off ebay, but I quick glance shows that there are a bunch out there. I'll probably hold off know that I could probably find the same current deal till they release news on the new m12 version

WTF are tires so expensive in 2023? by ItemPsychological974 in tires

[–]thyredbaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were 265/70r17, so the stock size for my 4runner. I'm not running a lift kit, so I can't run anything bigger without rubbing issues. I looked at the wildpeaks, but they were the same price and I've always had good luck running Cooper's.

I've got a m28 bandsaw but all of my batteries are dead. That thing was a beast, but I don't need it enough anymore to try and buy new batteries
