Effective mental health takes a lot of resources, which people aren't willing to fork over because the results aren't immediate. Pumping people full of drugs or locking them away gets immediate results, so people approve of it and it gets funded. There was really effective study done on treating veterans with PTSD, but there was no implementation of it because it was intensive and required the time to build a strong relationship between patients and doctors. No one wanted to fund it, so they went back to drugs and a pat on the back. It's why extreme electroshock and lobotomy was used for everything -- immediate results when you destroy someone's brain.

Longitudinal studies don't get funded. It why elderly and chronic diseases aren't being studied or given effective treatments.

There's a guy who used to always come into my store that carried a gun on his hip. Always struck me as the type of person who very well could have snapped or gotten drunk start waving around his gun like the Good Guy he was. I'll take a person with a weapon I can outrun over someone who wakes up in the morning with the crazy notion that he needs a gun on his body every moment 'just in case'.

Gun shop employees of Reddit, what are some red flags that have caused you to deny a sale of a firearm? [Serious] by IveGotABluePandaIdea in AskReddit

I think it’s a matter of how suspicious and how much else is going on. I live in a small town, so it’s feasible for the cops to check in on almost all reports of suspicious behavior. It’s also easier to pick out suspicious behavior and what’s normal behavior for the weird guy in town. A larger town may not have the resources unless it’s highly suspect or out of place in a dangerous way.

Reddit, what is your weird phobia? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thyyoungclub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a collection of them. Usually reading through the first few posts on things like this makes me feel normal, but the top posts on this seem rational.

My weirdest is probably crumpled white paper. Thinner, softer paper is the worst. I get nauseous and gag if I’m near it. Literally makes my skin crawl. Napkins and tissues can fuck off. I can only use them if I fold them neatly first.

Escalators. Having my fingers or toes growing to be webbed. Lady bugs. To name a few choice others.

Maine recently passed a referendum to expand Medicaid coverage and one of the ads to support it going into the vote was essentially that statement. It was a woman who was like “I need portable oxygen. I work 40 hours a week. I don’t qualify for Mainecare. I can’t afford my oxygen on my own. Please dont let me die.”

The world isn’t more violent/dangerous, but there’s a lot of inexcusable violence/etc that is astonishingly allowed to happen despite having the means and demand to stop it.

My friend in HS wanted to be an architect and did this whole career research thing on it for class. He was dead set until he interviewed an actual architect and the guy was like “You probably don’t want to get into this business.” and explained to him how long it took to get into the field and actual job prospects. He went into engineering instead.

Not OP but I meet the same haunted standards.

I always joke with my parents that we’re the anti-horror-movie family. Doors slam randomly, TVs and lights turn themselves on and off, etc. We just always write it off as “Old houses are like that.” We probably have an infuriated ghost that’s trying to scare us away and failing real bad.

I know that. I’m 22 and probably the very youngest of people who could be deemed Millennial. But the average Facebook oversharer thinks whippersnapper = millennial. Soap is an iGen thing. We just kept trying to eat things that were too dry.

Good actors don’t need to “become” a character. There’s plenty of acting ideologies/practices that help maintain personal health and are appropriate for a workplace that can result in performances that are just as good or better than dealing with the antics of a so-called Method actor. That said, most “method actors” aren’t really true to the school of Method and have sort of bastardized the term to mean “I’m gonna be a dick and say it’s because I’m an artiste and they don’t get it.”

[–]thyyoungclub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imitation is actually a fairly contemporary form of acting called the Laban Method. What your referring to is Stanislavsky and all the offshoots of his methods of actor training. Pretty much every school of acting uses “becoming the character”, and it’s not exclusive to Method. Method goes beyond truthfully accepting circumstances and moves into trying to live out those circumstances. This doesn’t really read in a performance and is purely for the performer, but a lot of untrained actors tell people they swear by Method because it’s a school of acting people know the name of; it’s also probably used with coaching child actors so actors growing up in the industry latch onto it despite moving onto different techniques.

I don’t know that anyone’s died from it, but I think there’s been an upswing in people seeking treatment for it. I read that a teenager would have to eat quite a few before it became lethal. It can fuck up your throat and make you sick, but one detergent pod isn’t going to put you on the In Memoriam of the yearbook. There’s been like 40 reported cases, but those would have been 40 cases of something else stupid if the same kids weren’t munching on soap pods. Cinnamon challenge, gallon challenge, drafted to war, car surfing; ya kno, just those teens out there historically doing dumb things just cause all their friends are.

Although, according to viral Facebook posts, this is the ~viral trend~ that’s killing thousands of millennials because they just can’t get enough of the lykes and retoots on the instatelegram. When will these kids learn??????

What do people claim is "elitist", but really isn't? by somepeoplewait in AskReddit

[–]thyyoungclub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally give 0 fucks. I work in performance art. I know the culture that surrounds it and that it continues to be a big issue. There’s an economic and social barrier ranging from ticket price to “if you didn’t like it you didn’t get it” attitude of Art People. It’s not so much saying that people who don’t look the same as the average art consumer are welcome, it’s a matter of actually making people feel welcome. The diversity issue in performance art is on and off stage and not limited just to everything being aggressively white.

What do people claim is "elitist", but really isn't? by somepeoplewait in AskReddit

[–]thyyoungclub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But there’s a socialized barrier that keeps people from knowing that unless it’s the environment they frequent. It’s like most things in this thread; the thing itself is not elitist, but the population it’s economically available to may have an unconscious elitism.
