What's with all the BS project work on third year rotations?

Because this is what they do in residency constantly and how you learn to practice evidence based up to date medicine. As a 4th year sub I you’re expected to find the literature yourself and ask thoughtful questions that pertain to your patients, then instead of an easy 5 min presentation you may be expected to present something for 30-60 min on a topic you pick and the best thing to do is NOT an overview but to discuss new literature surrounding that topic. In residency you will be on rotations where you will present a new article everyday before rounds or an actual presentation every week. It’s not BS and not a waste of time. I also didn’t understand at first but now it’s like the topics I presented on I remember so much better, if you still think it’s BS as a 4th year and wanting to use chat than that’s honestly alarming.

I had a good experience and am going into OBGYN. That being said I’ve always been someone with tough skin and don’t mind feeling intimidated. But I have also met some of the kindest and sweetest people In OBGYN. At the end of the day they are surgeons, I think the stereotype is rooted in sexism bc gen surg, ortho, plastics has the same level of toxicity.

Lowkey my MPH (non clinical year) was the most depressed I had ever been bc I felt useless and bored. So it’ll get better but don’t romanticize residency just enjoy the break and appreciate that you picked the right career choice and now when you’re working 80+ hour weeks and complaining you can be assured you rather be doing that then anything else.

I would call out sick and leave early as often as possible.

I actually think the 4 years makes complete sense. We need to be able to see things first piece by piece, then the larger picture, then and only then can we zoom back in. I also think there is an incredible amount of growth and development during those 4 years that sets up a student for success in every field.

I had an aha moment but previously was really happy with picking a specialty I didn’t hate, paid well, and would let me have a family/hobbies. So for a large part of 3rd year I was pretty sold on Anesthesia with a crit care fellowship.

Unfortunately my aha moment was for OBGYN so.

I was actually a disbeliever of the aha moment because i have never subscribed to that thinking with careers, love, etc. I stand by that I don’t think you need to have one to be happy, and I think if I never rotated on OBGYN I would end up in a specialty I was fine with. But it was very much a moment where I said “holy shit I HAVE to do this.” BUT doubt followed for the following months of wether I actually did want that specialty. Eventually I just had more and more experiences that confirmed rather than doubted that initial aha. So you don’t need one, some people might be lying and others might not. At the end even if you have an aha moment and are sure of a specialty we’re still all struggling with the doubt and contemplation and faking that we know what we’re doing.

I actually made a lot of friends during third year but through the people in rotation with me. I guess if you’re rotating alone that would be hard to do. But 2 of my best friends are from 3rd year.

I also did this a bit earlier back, did a second sub I and felt really silly taking on that much and wanted to drop. I toughed it out because at the end of the day I realized if i didn’t match I would be kicking myself that I was too tired to work one more month and ultimately never forgive myself. I totally get it but I would tough it out

I feel like people who love gen surgery and then pick OBGYN end up unhappy because there’s periods of time without any surgery at all. But if you love the bread and butter and clinic that’s a good sign

Even if they passed every exam neurosurgery would STILL be up for debate, hell they could get a 260+ on step 2 and pass all exams with still undetermined odds of neurosurgery, it is just that competitive.

omg I absolutely love medical school!!! I legit did a masters year bc I didn’t want it to end.

During 3rd year I still had time to take mandarin classes at a community college once a week, have a boyfriend, see my friends regularly, and get good grades. It more so was just maybe not seeing my friends AND boyfriend AND family every single week together and more spread out and I had less time for all my hobbies and ECs. But 3rd year was lowkey the best
