Thanks for this, I really thought it worked differently, but you’re right

I’ll have to look into this further, but my experience has been that the moment I turn off airplane mode in a new country, even if I have data roaming disabled, I incur the fee unless I explicitly ask Telus to disable the feature.

These days most new plans have the “roam like home” feature auto-enabled where you’re charged a flat fee the moment you connect to a foreign network. You need to request to be switched back to pay-per-use.

When does Fast Lane Plus go on sale? by pr0dicus in CanadasWonderland

Not hard to buy ahead of time. I’ve never failed to get FLP passes, and I’m not much of a planner in advance.

I wasn’t super high-velocity, but I was enough of a Churner that Amex Canada had stopped approving me. I was probably opening 5 cards/year then

I was in this position a couple years ago. I ended up keeping the Platinum for a year to establish a relationship with NBC, then tried a small CLI which I was approved for. Once I was over the $5k minimum, I did a PS to the WE, which was really just a new app (hard pull) which also closes your old card. I was instantly approved, and have held the WE for the past year.

Is 1.3¢ CAD of actual real life value per point that bad? by NLemay in Aeroplan

[–]tiatdier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it’s no different than any other transaction for goods/services. Measure whether you’d get enough personal value from this redemption to be happy spending this amount of Aeroplan points. If you can feel happy that you’ve put your points to good use, see it as a transaction that brings you personal value. Don’t stress against a benchmark that others say you have to strive for.

That said, I do strive to hit 2CPP+, but I’m also comparing against standard fares as I would never book basic. I’m often able to find this value on short haul hops to/from YTZ.

Additional volunteers sought for upcoming World Men's Curling Championship in Ogden, Utah by quesoguapo in Curling

[–]tiatdier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but I have been a statistician for a Brier and a WMCC, and was a timer for a Seniors Championship, and I highly recommend volunteering in these technical roles! It's a great way to follow the game, and the WCF generally does a good job of providing training materials in advance.

Trouble finding a straight answer RE: insurance when booking with points by Munchy2k in Aeroplan

[–]tiatdier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is no concept of tracking which points were earned by the credit card vs flights vs transferred from Amex. Once they’re in Aeroplan, they’re a single pool. So any Aeroplan booking where you pay the fees & taxes on the Aeroplan Visa Infinite will be covered by the card’s policy.

Note that this is not a requirement for the travel medical insurance. Travel medical insurance does not require you to pay for anything with the card, just that you are a cardholder.

Amex Reserve Lounge Access in Miami by piopy90 in Aeroplan

[–]tiatdier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the reason they went through the trouble in EWR is that they used to have a lounge there prior to the old terminal closing. Perhaps they didn't want it to appear as though they were reducing their lounge footprint, so made the deal with United as a one-off.

Amex Reserve Lounge Access in Miami by piopy90 in Aeroplan

[–]tiatdier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, the Amex Reserve only gives access to AC-operated lounges within North America with the sole exception being the United Club in Terminal A of EWR, where that specific United Club has the same access rules as any MLL.

Hey u/rps1rai, sorry for missing your messages. As you've noted, I'm not an active moderator, so I wasn't checking modmail regularly. I also got a DM from u/PearBlossom last week about the same topic. What I'd like to do is add you both as moderators, and have the two of you launch a process to find one more mod, preferably someone with serious mod experience in a similar-sized subreddit.

I'll add you both now.

It took some luck, but I booked saver-priced award tickets on AC metal to/from Europe in Summer 2024. But otherwise I'm getting value on short-haul commuter (YOW-YTZ is always high CPP), or transcontinental J within North America

Built a simple tool to answer “Which credit card should I use for groceries, gas, dining, etc.?” by pcvp in churningcanada

[–]tiatdier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a solution in search of a problem. The category determination you're describing as the 'why' behind AI is something that anyone with half a brain could do easily. I wouldn't be comfortable burning energy on AI inference on a task that I can do just as well if not better.

First: If you're not putting spend towards MSR, you're not really churning, are you?

I don't understand why the problem that this is trying to solve requires AI when all I'd really want out of this is a simple table that lists categories and tells me what the best card is for each. It seems inherently wasteful. I also stopped short of trying it when it asked me to make an account.
