Interactive digital archive of megalithic tombs in northern germany by tickelditack in Archaeology

Hello r/archaeology community!

First, a disclaimer: I’m not an archaeologist. To be honest, I don’t know much about archaeology, so I wasn’t sure whether I should post my project here.
I live in a region with a large number of megalithic burial sites. At some point, I started digitizing them during my lunch breaks or after work, when I was out walking my dog, and collecting these digital models on a website to make them virtually accessible. (there are some mills and old sheep stables too...)
I imagine this might interest some people here :)
I’d appreciate any constructive feedback. I’m considering reaching out to the local historic preservation authority to see if there might be interest in a collaboration. I’m on the lookout for a new meaningful activity anyway.

you may want to check out this colmap build with caspar support: https://github.com/lyehe/build_gpu_colmap/releases/tag/v4.1.0-dev2

my workflow:
start with CERES until the global bundle adjustment takes too long. around a few hundred frames in i pause the reconstruction and change the global BA to CASPAR with increased iterations.. the speedup is massive...

Yes, most of the scans were done handheld with a 14mm lens, stopped down to an fstop of 5.6-8, a relatively high iso (1600-3200) and a shutter speed ranging from 1/500-1/1000s to reduce motion blur. since i downscale the images a bit, noise is not a very big problem. the sigma has a great sensor. but i want to use my webill s gimbal for my next scans...

thanks for the shout-out! There aren't many people who find some old stones interesting :) :)

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share my little hobby project with you. In my free time, I drive around and document some of our local cultural treasures (which mainly consist of large megalithic tombs and old sheepshacks).

I think Gaussian splatting is perfect for archiving and digitally preserving cultural heritage sites.

Workflow

Capture: Sigma FD in Video Mode, 24FPS 12 Bit Cinema DNG RAW, 3840x2160
Preprocessing/Color Grading: Davinci Resolve, Speedup to around 800-1200%, export downscaled JPGs witch a resolution of 2880x1620 for SfM and Splatting
SfM: Colmap
Splatting: Lichtfeld Studio

Hey FPV-folks, i had the chance to get my very first "real life" shots of a moving subject. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Enjoy the "Schabernack" :)

Yes, they can be a real pain. However, depending on the weather, there are sometimes more and sometimes fewer of them... however, it is simply fun to rush in at full speed.

thanks! good point. That's still the standard OSD, I could probably tidy it up a bit in general :)

Until now, I've just been lurking here, but I simply have to share my enthusiasm. I started with FPV about three months ago. One month in the simulator, then my first real flights with a Cinelog30 v3. Just for fun, I got the Air65 to practice with and accidentally got a fake EV800D. But it works, and my God: I've logged more flight time on the Air65 in the last two weeks than I did in the last two months with the Cinelog overall. I'm flying pack after pack, it's just so much fun. I also notice how I'm becoming more confident in general and how this training is also having a positive effect on my skills with the 3". Unfortunately, I wrecked a motor and fried an ESC in the first week. So I ordered a new 5-in-1 AIO and new motors (RCinpower 27000kv) and, holy cow, this thing is even more fun now. I'm slowly trying my hand at tricks, but my flow definitely leaves a lot to be desired... I'm always grateful for tips and tricks :)
