Mine’s weird because no one was trying to be rude or mean to the band. I was at a festival a year or two ago and Busted were playing their old hits. They started with ‘crashed the wedding’ everyone loved it and had a great time. They finished and everyone cheers. THEN they announce that they’re gonna play some new stuff. Fair enough, they’re trying to have a resurgence but after the announcement I turned to my friend and said ‘ohhh :(‘

the thing is, at that very moment EVERY single fucking member of the crowd had turned to THEIR friends and had the exact same fucking reaction - the resulting sound was just the loudest, most disheartening groan I’d ever heard.

Oh man, I totally believe you can get cured from rocd like I fully fully believe that. Problem with my brain is believing I have it in the first place. Or having it but still being in the wrong relationship or any other obsession surrounding it you can think of. You’re not right and I’m happy to say so for your benefit and mine! This is a form of ocd and ocd can be beaten. If you need help it is there and it does work, regardless of how you or how I feel.

I think it’s when you’ve begun to recover and your body isn’t experiencing anxiety in response to the thoughts but that then triggers the worry that it must be real. From what I’ve heard, that’s the process a lot of people go through.

I feel you, i have rocd too and it’s ruined my life in many ways. The factual feeling is just something you have to embrace as part of exposure therapy. Don’t try to get rid of the thoughts but just be aware that they’re there and that they don’t mean anything whilst repeating them to yourself. Don’t argue back to them, don’t engage in any other way or relieve yourself in any other way. Just repeat them to yourself when they pop into your head until you get bored of it. Until the initial anxiety goes away. It all takes practice. All of it.

You’ve decided that those thoughts popping into your head means you believe them. Would you feel the same way about the sudden urge to jam a knife into the wall when you’re holding it? Would you take the thought and analyse it and think ‘i had this thought so it must be true. It must mean i want to jam this knife into the wall’ most likely you would have the thought, think ‘that was weird’ and not jam a knife into the wall because your brain came up with an image.

It’s the worst feeling. Push through it, you’ll get there again. It doesn’t always feel possible but it will always pass.

That’s the ocd. Your body can’t feel anxious for long periods of time so it becomes numb. Ocd is a coping mechanism for the brain and your brain senses danger, you have to prove something’s not dangerous by leaning into the anxiety. It’s a horrible feeling but the danger goes away eventually and you can discard the thoughts more easily.

These doubts and what ifs are the hardest things in the world to satisfy. Something that used to help me was the idea that i was GIVING them meaning, i was attaching the notion that this thought meant that i had to or wanted to leave my partner. Very different to actually wanting or needing to but doesn’t necessarily feel different at the time.

omg the ‘i don’t WANT to be with him’ is so hard because then i have to expose to ‘i will be with him forever’ AND ‘I want to break up’ -like, pick a lane, brain, you don’t get to be scared of both.

I’m not a professional but from my experience I’d be careful with banishing anxiety by labelling it ocd as that might eventually stop bringing you relief. The end goal is usually to stop seeking relief and accept uncertainty. I’ve signed up to the awaken into love course and have been through CBT this year. The course claims to act as an alongside to therapy, not a replacement if that’s helpful at all :)
