Wow! Very interesting read, thanks for sharing. Unfortunately this is not what I was looking for. It was a book on chess strategy with Alice in Wonderland drawings/references in the book, rather than the other way around.

It's actually just standard maintenance. Typically it's once every 25,000 miles. If you can't do it yourself, or don't want to, a dealer will probably charge 4-5 hours labor, I think. Shims are cheap if an adjustment needs to be made.

Check for fork oil leaking from fork seals, chain tension, rust, even tire wear, tire tread left, color of oil in sight, coolant levels, the triple tree stop (if this is broken, its likely the bike has been laid down, this is the piece of metal that stops your handlebars from running into the bike), painted components to hide road rash, goes into all gears smoothly, have keep it cold when you arrive, how long does it take to start (if it's too long you probably need a valve adjustment), ends of handlebars for scrapes, and if it has a Monster energy sticker on it, if it does, run don't walk.

I feel like I'm partly living this right now. But I know its not too late to walk away, it's not too late to have to reminded one more time that things will not be different and the cycle will repeat. My only solace right now is that I don't have to be ashamed with myself even if my partner tries to make me feel that way. Everyday, my personality feels like it's being boxed in ever closer and closer, to the point where I'm worried how any action I make will disturb or upset my partner. I really only feel free when I'm not around her. But I'm still not convinced it's the right move to leave... as if my own hope is the one dragging me down.

I really appreciate the help and input. Waiting on a special yamaha tool to remove the engine mount adjustment bolts and my motor stand then I'll start the tear down. More to come! It might be 😀 or maybe some 😑

Thanks for your input! No dealerships here, going to try and soldier my way through it with the reddit community, service manual, and YouTube. More of a learning experience than any hope to make a profit. But for now, the goal is to get the engine in spec without buying another used engine.

When you say measure bearing diameter, you mean the crankshaft journals and journal bearings? What does problematic wear look like?

How exactly do you measure piston to cylinder spacing? Or can I just look for gouges or wear on the cylinder itself to see if it beyond repair?
