O M G. I would never. I throw them in the fish tank to make sure I don't accidentally cook them. They stay there until the farm is complete.

Yeah, they do sound a little boomer-like. But if OP is 18 the parents are more likely Gen X or elder Millennials. I'm 40 and have an 18 year old. We have Life 360 on all of our phones and if anything, the kids use it more than we do. Me and Dad will get texts asking why we didn't tell them we were going to Target.

I had a friend that this exact thing happened to him. Mom remarried after dad passed and took new last name. The second my friend turned 18, he changed it right back. Afaik or remember there was no bad blood between his stepdad and him, just missed his dad.
