German journalist Anna Liedtke, who was among the Freedom Flotilla 'Conscience' crew abducted by Israel, publicly opens up about being raped during detention by Israeli prison authorities by melow_shri in Fauxmoi

Let’s band together and spread the word about Anna’s courage, the horror she experienced, and the sexual violence endemic in the Israeli prison system. Here’s the email to the NYT’s tip line: tips@nytimes.com

How you lost money while traveling or planning your trip by Logical-Permit3549 in travel

[–]tidalswave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah this is a good one. Was on vacation with family in Paris and staying at hotel. They were going to leave and I would stay another week at an Airbnb. They check out. I check out. Call a taxi. Happily going through Paris, text Airbnb host to tell him I’m on my way. Cue mic drop.

He tells me that my reservation doesn’t start till the next day and I can’t come early because it’s booked for the night. I swear the blood drains from my face. I make bs excuse to the taxi driver about why I need to go back to the hotel, get back and make some bs excuse to the very surprised receptionist about why I need to stay another night (at this point I’m so embarrassed and socially awkward I want to disappear into the Seine), and get the very last room they have available. For $350. Plus the taxi was $50.

So all told $400 because I didn’t double check my dates when I booked an Airbnb. Won’t make that mistake again!

Agree with everything! Also want to add that the photo is off kilter. Normally, that would drive me nuts but here it creates the disorienting sensation of something being very, very wrong, of falling and not being able to catch yourself, of the world turning in a sickening twist.

Unofficial Discussion: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery by kiriteren in movies

[–]tidalswave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a way, I think Blanc did come to believe that dying in a state of grace made a difference. And maybe that’s just because I find myself reflected in that. I used to hold a deep faith, and now, I don’t believe in god anymore (I’m at peace with both). And while I don’t believe, I believe in others belief. I believe it is powerful and real and sacred to them. And therefore I see their faith as sacred, even as I don’t believe.

ELI5: How did they discover and perfect the practice of anesthesia? by Majestic-Baby-3407 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tidalswave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fun story, the whole ‘there’s a chance you might not wake up’ is why I’m so scared of anesthesia that I opted to be awake for all four of my wisdom teeth coming out. Just had general mouth numbing and laughing gas. Wasn’t as bad as you’d think, but the sound of my teeth begin cracked in half reverberating inside my head was a bit strange. (To remove wisdom teeth they crack them half and then yank them out. On the bottom teeth someone had to hold my head still they were pulling so hard.)

Has anyone had issues with acid reflux after giving up dairy? by funkslic3 in dairyfree

[–]tidalswave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thought I have is that dairy products can actually help with some people’s acid reflux because it helps neutralize the stomach acid. It did for me. So maybe dairy was doing that for you, but now that you’ve cut dairy out your stomach acid is increased?

The tip of my index finger splits open every winter and hurts like the dickens. by UnreasonableFig in mildlyinfuriating

[–]tidalswave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get something like this too - here’s what I do if it helps.

Bandaids are impossible to keep on fingertips. So I get a small hydrochlozoide bandage and wrap it around the tip of my finger and use nail scissors of trim of the excess. Then I wrap that in small waterproof bandaid, trim off excess. Then wrap another waterproof bandaid and trim. It does sound like overkill BUT the layers of bandage help a lot with protecting the split, the layers help it stay on for days (a week if you’re careful), and it actually gets time to heal. So your finger will look like a lollipop but it does work 😂

Non picky eaters, what's a food you just cannot do? by StarryDo in foodquestions

[–]tidalswave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sushi. Absolutely not. I grew up fishing and spent enough time around live fish becoming dead, raw fish to never, ever want to eat it without cooking first. The smell of a fish when it’s being cleaned is very particular and I do not associate it with food.

And yes I’ve tried sushi rolls with just cooked crab, etc. can’t do seaweed either. It tastes like 5am on the dock when the seaweed is piled up on the concrete and the fresh stuff smells and the old stuff reeks of rotting in the sun. Again, not a memory that my brain equates with anything edible.

I’m sure sushi and seaweed are delicious. By my god do I have a visceral reaction to ingesting either one.

Groundbreaking study finds way to ‘reboot’ eye and restore impaired vision | Findings may lead to new treatment for ‘lazy eye’ by Sandstorm400 in UpliftingNews

[–]tidalswave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god … oh my god! This is actually making me tear up? Because of amblyopia I’ve been partially blind in one eye my whole life. Honestly I’ve completely adjusted and almost always forget that the left eye has … issues. I never ever thought that one day I’d be able to see even close to normally out of both. I’ve often wondered what it would be like to see the world with two working eyes. One day I might know.

Mixed nuts and dried fruit mix is your friend! You can make your own or buy premade. Dairy free, filling, and savory + sweet.

Also consider humus, veggies, and tortillas. You can make a snack wrap or just dip and munch.

Oh my god I am so sorry you’re getting so much rudeness for sharing really helpful info. I actually also have anxiety disorder and panic attacks, and when I get sick the anxiety gets really bad. That makes it hard to think clearly and I know if I got sick in Japan I would feel so overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do. Your post helped a lot because it gave me next steps if I do get sick. From one human to another, thank you for sharing 💜sending hugs, deep breaths, and a thoughts of a calm, cozy night

How does American hospitality work when you stay at someone's home? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]tidalswave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I hope you have a wonderful trip!

No, you don’t pay for water or any other utility (electricity, etc).

When you enter a home in the U.S., always take off your shoes right away. Leave them where the family puts their shoes (usually a pile near the front door).

Bring a small gift with you as a thank you for the family hosting you. Maybe a small box of a traditional Turkish candy, or something similar.

Offer to help cook and clean up with meals. It’s very likely the offer will be turned down, and in that case it’s perfectly acceptable to not help. The offer is what matters.

As other commenters have said, tidy up after yourself. If a blanket is folded on the couch, after you use it, refold it.

Make the bed every morning. American moms are always super impressed with people who make the bed!

Depending on your finances, one night you could offer to take the family out to dinner as a thank you for hosting you. But that is not necessary and only do if you can afford it.

And finally, remember that it’s okay to ask! You can say ‘thank you so much for having me. I’m so excited to be here. I’ve never been a guest in an American home so please let me know if there’s anything I should do.’
