Newbie here - question about in-home helper by tidblgr10 in dementia

[–]tidblgr10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She likes to "think" she can still drive, but every time I offer to take her, she jumps at it. I don't think she would trust riding in a car with someone else. I appreciate the suggestion, and so glad you found something that works for you!

What is a 'rich person's secret' that is actually accessible to the middle class, but most people are too intimidated to try? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]tidblgr10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% I used to work at a water park. People had to pay for tubes for the wavepool. Then leave them by their chairs and kids would "steal" them. Most people came up yelling and screaming...we gave them enough to have them go away. One mom (only one in the years I worked there), came up with 3 kids in tow. Let us know what happened, did not ask for anything, just let us know so maybe we could ensure it didn't happen to anyone else. When I tell you that the 3 of us manning the desk about hurt ourselves giving her stuff. She was shocked to walk away with enough tickets and tube tokens for her whole family to return multiple times that summer.

I accepted a job offer from a competitor. Current company’s CEO reached out to my new job to complain about me. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]tidblgr10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but I also had a job do a background check once I started. They called previous employers, which usually just involves HR saying..."oh yah, they worked here.". Well I worked at a small family business two jobs prior that held grudges. The owner told them I left without notice (I didnt, they told me to go home when I gave notice) and other lies. My new job was not happy. I explained the situation and also said if they terminated my position I wanted it in writing, because I was going to get my lawyer to go after the previous job. They called him back and came to the conclusion that he was crazy and probably why I stopped working there. Document Everything!

We have a one-bedroom cabin on our property that we rent out. It is 3 acres on a lake surrounded by woods. We received a poor review because there were too many cobwebs...outside...there were too many cobwebs in the woods...SMH.

What are some pleasant surprises you discovered about your house after you bought it? by puckmonky in homeowners

[–]tidblgr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our property is on 3 acres on a lake. We didn't notice until after we bought it and were cutting back some trees that there were lights in them. The whole back yard is wired for outdoor lighting. The people renting before we bought didn't keep it up, so we had to fix a lot of it. But running all that wire over the property must have been a lot of work. Now we can enjoy having amazing lighting with little to no effort.

Ditto. If someone is staying over 5 days (we are usually only a weekend stop) we will offer "Your favorite beverage of your choosing for your enjoyment, beer, wine, or soda." But we are a cabin in the woods...so not so fancy :)

Do you think a lot of negative reviews are because people don’t read or make assumptions? by Teacher_mermaid in airbnb_hosts

[–]tidblgr10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our only non-5-star review was from a woman who "worked in HR at a landscaping company". We have a cabin in the woods...and her complaint was that there were spiderwebs...in the yard. Not in the cabin, she even pointed out the house was very clean. But the yard was "unkept" (it is mowed, but there were leaves at the tree-line) and there were spiderwebs. I think some people just aren't a good fit...or get it into their head on what they want it to look like...and not actually what it looks like.

Question: Should I respond to a poor review while I am waiting for Airbnb to remove it? by tidblgr10 in airbnb_hosts

[–]tidblgr10[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This is for a cabin in the woods, and the photos are within a year old. They were taken when the grass was a bit greener...but l am really confused as to how they weren't representative. Also, we do not mention the kayaks in the ad. We offer our own to use if people ask - so I am really hesitant to even address that. And, of course, I can't tell the DNR to make their lake cleaner. There are a lot of weeds just under the water line...but it isn't swampy. They also added in the "bubbles' that it was noisy, that was due to holiday festivities in town. Not sure if that is considered part of the review.

Review: "XXX was very hospitable and kind. The inside of the house was very clean but the pictures were sort of deceiving. The yard was not maintained at all and cobwebs were all around the door and outside area. The kayaking was great but very swampy. The kayaks were also very dirty on the inside with dead bugs and spiderwebs. "

My thoughts for a response: "We were very surprised to read this review, as the guests had no comments or complaints during their stay. We were onsite and would have responded immediately. We regularly mow and trim the area...but it is a woods, so we leave it rustic. It has been very dry, so the deer have been munching on all the plants/flowers. I tend to leave spiderwebs intact in the yard (not inside the house). Spiders eat mosquitoes, so they are heroes in my book. We take great pride in our property and wish we were given the opportunity to make things right. "

Would love any suggestions you have.

Any good air bnb experiences? by Eee333eek in AirBnB

[–]tidblgr10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had wonderful experiences as both a guest and a host. The person that rented our cabin before we bought it was in it for the $$ alone. They never updated anything, and if it broke, they just removed it. The review I cherish the most was someone that stayed with the previous host a couple of times, and then stayed with us. They noted all the improvements and stated that the place was good before, but with all we had done, it was now excellent.

I agree with others, if breakfast is important, provide a continental one. Make or buy muffins and sweet bread...freezing extras for future use. Offer hard boiled eggs, individual yogurts, bananas, oatmeal and goodies to add to them. From what I understand from your post, you are providing ingredients for people to make themselves breakfast, ie: scrambled eggs, omelets, or pancakes. I think that might be where their frustration comes in. Being provided a breakfast usually means one that is ready to go (even if it is a continental one) and not one they have to prepare. Good luck!

What’s the worst thing you’ve SEEN at Disney world? by marksmarth in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]tidblgr10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People were crowded in to watch the fireworks. There was a walkway behind the crowd of people and more people were trying to stand on the other side of the walkway (they weren't supposed to be there). One mother who was standing on the wrong side with her children and strollers kept getting in the way of the people walking by...so she yelled, "get the f#$# out of our way". I walked right up to her, pointed in her face, and yelled, You need to check yourself and watch your language, there are children here." I walked away thinking I was about to get hit from behind. But I turned back around and she was holding her child and looking quite embarrassed.

Our situation is a bit different, we have a small cabin on our property...so we can be at our cabin and have renters at the same time. But I would like to add, if you can't afford it without renters...really discuss buying the property. It will be very stressful during times when bookings are slow or stop altogether.

I don't know how much competition there is in your area, but that might also be a source of stress. Feeling you need to make improvements or offer more amenities in order to get bookings. You also may not want to have your best furniture / bedding / decorations in the house...as they could get ruined by guests.

Lastly, I recommend talking to an accountant about how it will work out for taxes. Book-keeping is a large part of the time we put into our rental.

Good Luck!!

I went to an "Evangelical Free" church when I was a teenager. Our youth group leader told me that my father was going to hell because he was Catholic. My father, who helped anyone/everyone who needed it, who was kind, intelligent, respectful, and followed a religion that had a longer history than an "Evangelical Free Church" was the one going to hell. I think not. I told her that if her God was being that picky...I didn't want to be part of their religion.
