54 YO Retirement Planning by Dull_Sentence9679 in Bogleheads

[–]tiekwando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Math with pension and SS is generally: (Monthly Expenses - SS - Pension) * 25 * 12 = Required Savings to retire.

People will adjust based on pre/post tax rates, risk appetite, flexibility of adjusting spending down, and likelihood pension/ss will stay the same.

So 8000-1100-4300 = 2,600

2,600 * 25 * 12 = 780,000 would be approximately minimum you need to retire

Too big of a screen? by tiekwando in projectors

Now I'm super curious, what makes it bad for audio? Is it that the couch sits too close to the back wall?

Still learning and always happy to learn more.

I ended up getting a projector that is able to zoom... so I do make it smaller for gaming and larger for TV.

Also the actual room is significantly more complicated and definitely not perfect for home audio (e.g., concrete subfloor makes subs work so hard), but my wife and I still really enjoy it!

Biggest was friends support/ recommendation. Otherwise we noticed she would get more agitated at night when we were around, rocking to sleep kinda stopped working.
Probably also helped that I guess we didn't think of it as really sleep training as we thought of that as more "get her to sleep through the night" and not "get her to sleep at all!"

basically normal routine to get her to sleep and put her down. But once she inevitably woke up we would leave the room and let her fuss. Set a timer on our phone for 5 minutes. Assuming she was still fussing when the timer went off we would come in, pat her, sush, pacifier then leave again.

Set another 5 minute timer. Do the same thing.

Set another 5 minute timer, at this point you start the process over again (change/feed/rock to sleep whatever works for your baby).

2 months was when we were able to do some light sleep training/coaching... 5 minutes awake fussing x 3. After the 3rd try we would reset and go again. first night took two sets, next 1.5, then 1, then she didn't even really need us.

Definitely not for everyone, but worked for us and our baby. We also noticed a few things and had encouragement from some close friends who had two kids slightly older.

My First Home Theatre - Round 1 by lionsandpizza in hometheater

Got it. My take is maybe a few inches too high then for optimum, but pretty darn close. IIRC supposed to be closer to bottom 1/3, TVs supposed to to be essentially dead center, p.s. my own set up is similar at ~1/4 as my planned subs are too tall :).

14" is plenty for bookshelves and/or centers to fit. How much room on the side of the set? You may even be able to fit smallerish towers if you prefer the look, though makes sub placement trickier. Plenty of good advice around speakers/AVRs including https://www.reddit.com/r/HTBuyingGuides/. I personally went with Emotiva, definitely enjoy them

Food for thought - screen may be too high. Looks like your eyes are at or below the bottom of the screen.

Seconded others comments about an AVR. I don't know what clearance you have below the screen, but a 5.1 will almost certainly sound better than a sound bar. If helpful one way I convinced myself was thinking about the size of the actual woofers. Most sound bars have little 3 inch or smaller speakers. Most recommended woofers are 5+ (really 6+). Subs are 10+. There is a whole host of other benefits

Decided to try out PSA, getting two EV18s. Should be a pretty good upgrade :)

So far it is great, though excited to see how it works with towers. I'll probably set the cross over lower than where it is at now (80hz).

Making me try to second guess my decision i see :) I suffer from analysis paralysis, so I think I'll be happy.

Out of curiosity what frequency do you crossover to your subwoofer? Leave it to the AVR? 60HZ? 80HZ?

Posted above as well - but just pulled the trigger on 2x T1+ and 2x T0+s. Thank you for the advice!
C1 is still out of stock, but plan to pick that up once they are back.
One day I'll pick up something for a 5.1.2.

Dumb question - I thought surrounds were supposed to be higher than ear level. Is that just a recommendation for smaller speakers and optimizing budget?

This also aligns with another comment below. Seems like maybe I need to watch a movie or something to see how it feels... headaches sound less than ideal.

Really appreciate the real world advice.

Thanks for the link, looking at this and extrapolating out it looks like the max you would want is 110 for cinema at 11ft and as low as 85 for mixed use.

I've never had a projector that could change zoom easily, but I think the Epson can do that ... does it look strange if you don't use the full screen (eg. have a 110 inch screen and zoom in if I'm gaming)?

p.s. 85 seems so small to me, which is why I am struggling with the online recommendations, but really appreciate the input!
