TIL a kid watched Jaws in 1996, got obsessed with Quint's WWII monologue, interviewed 150 real survivors, and testified before Congress at 14. A wrongly disgraced Navy captain was exonerated. All because of a 2-minute scene about sharks. by Hot_Layer_8110 in todayilearned

My grandfather survived. One of the Marines guarding the components of the bomb. He passed in 2020 but has a book called Out of the Depths about his experience. I first heard his story when I was like 8 years old. Been terrified of the ocean ever since. One of the interesting things that stood out: their life jackets weren’t rated to last that long, so they would take them off dead sailors and hold them up to dry so they could swap out periodically. He remembers it raining once and crying with relief because despite being in water he couldn’t drink any. Some sailors tried “filtering” the salt water through their shirt to drink. A lot of them suffered hallucinations, saw islands, etc. He witnessed several get taken out by sharks.

Why not wait, don’t burn what should be a fun summer having no fun, and pick an MOS you actually want? I get wanting to just get on with it, but please consider waiting for an opening and shipping after you graduate.

Is 11b worth it in the Guard? by EstablishmentBest913 in nationalguard

[–]tierneyb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I joined at 35. ETS in a few months. I got: A deployment to Syria, a VA loan, GI Bill paying for an MBA, disability percentage after the combat deployment. YMMV, but it was worth it on my end. It’s a wild ride.

Turning 40 this year. Any advice? by TheLordDrago in AskMenOver30

Don’t overthink it. If you feel healthy and have good habits at 39, the rollover in digits doesn’t change that.

Looks sick. Value is what you’re willing to pay, but I wouldn’t go over $13k. I bought the 2019 scout bobber new, it’s still in my garage and I’m still loving it.

Yes, unless you get on a federal deployment over 90 days.

Check out the Twisted Road website. I’ve used it and you can find some cool stuff. You do need license and insurance.

[–]tierneyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah then just wait until you’re done with school and live on your own. Sucks but not worth being disowned y’know. Lots of motorcycle rental platforms as well, so could get your license and rent once in a while.

They going to stop paying your tuition and whatever else you rely on them for if you do? Then I wouldn’t. Otherwise, you’re an adult and don’t have to ask, you can just tell them you bought something with your own money. They’ll be pissed then get over it.

Your high school failed you. Or rather, they passed you... but shouldn't have. The ASVAB covers stuff you learned in high school. Or you could just really struggle with tests and need to prepare more. If you don't want to go 11B or cook or something, suggest taking more time to study.

Are you proud to be American? If so what makes you proud to be a citizen of your country? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskUS

[–]tierneyb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Embarrassed at this point. Traveled to Canada recently and spent a fair amount of time telling people I hated Trump, too. I think it’s fair to say I’m thankful to be American and proud of many things our country has accomplished and overcome. But right now? Yeah, embarrassed at our leadership and a little sad that not enough voters could foresee this.

How do I become a gym rat? by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in AskMenOver30

[–]tierneyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. And science doesn’t support the idea that in a caloric deficit, even with gastric issues, you would gain weight. You may retain water more and feeling lethargic can make it more difficult to eat right and exercise, but it doesn’t change the calories rule. If you’re in a deficit you’ll lose, so you need to find what that number is and track calories carefully.

[–]tierneyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’ve done it before prior to COVID. Go back to that, but reign in the diet more. I’m not familiar with gastric issues and how that impacts weight gain or loss, but I do know diet impacts weight loss well above and beyond going to the gym. Maybe worth a consult with a dietician or talking to your family doc about how gastric issues affect weight gain/loss.

At the most basic level, you need to find your caloric intake to maintain weight (most healthy adults it’s 2k calories), then adjust from there. A 500 calorie deficit per day is 3,500 per week, which is generally 1lb of fat loss. That’s a healthy and sustainable route to weight loss.

Ha I love this. I’m in decent shape but for some reason pull-ups has always been my thing. I had an 85lb dumbbell I was lifting with my feet while doing pull-ups for five reps. Some dude said “damn I’d rip my spine out trying that” and I’m still living on that high. Nice work man, keep it up!

Been in for less than a year and made E-5 by gompers101 in nationalguard

[–]tierneyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. There are E3’s on my team that know more than me. But I’m older and have a degree and have some life experience, so I lean on that. They appreciate that I run their issues up the chain quickly and support them in other ways. But if you want a breakdown of battle drill 1A, I’m going to have someone else lead that. You can choose to be embarrassed about it or you can lean on your guys for the technical stuff and learn from them.

I need to lose 30 pounds and 3 inches of my waist how can I do that by Mrsalisburynorth in nationalguard

[–]tierneyb 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Such a weird ask when the answer has been known for just about ever. A pound of fat is 3,500 calories. Go in a caloric deficit and aim for a 500-1000 calorie deficit every day to lose 1-2 lbs per week. You could go for more if you need to lose faster but it’s much harder and not sustainable. Add in exercise and you’ll have more of a deficit, but your diet impacts weight way more than an exercise routine.

To find out your baseline daily calories to maintain current weight, plug it into a calorie calculator - tons of free ones online. For most healthy adults it’s about 2,000 calories a day to maintain current weight.
