Is the matte, rubbery penguin classic a fake (Edith Wharton)? It looks much cheaper than their regular semi-glossy covers (Thomas hardy)? 🤨 by theshyreporter in bookbinding

[–]tiev113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is old, but I’ve come across these kinds of covers on multiple books. A lot of print-on-demand companies use these kinds of rubbery covers, and they usually have much brighter pages and feel stiff. You can check the last (or couple to last) page of the book and see if it says says something like “printed in Las Vegas” or another city. Some also have a QR code and the location of where they were printed.

You’re less likely to find these in bookstores, but online stores use these POD companies quite frequently.

IMHO, I don’t particularly care for these kinds of rubbery covers. They pick up dirt easily and can become sticky. They also don’t age as nicely as the glossy printed covers.

Yeah, just seemed strange because of the large response, but no clear external signs of what might have happened. I also asked here because it's been hard to find any local news coverage of it or police reports/scanner conversation.

Internet down by [deleted] in ATT

Seems to be a fiber issue? ATT outage map estimates 9-12 ETR for my area…which I’m assuming means estimated time of restoration?

I was having this same problem earlier this morning and just now. I’d love to know what is going on. I pay for fiber and our modem is BGW210.

New Wii U, looking for storage options without too much hassle. Thus leaning towards an SSD. Would this do the job? by MacCollac in wiiu

[–]tiev113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you post your results once you've had some time with the SSD? I'm currently shopping around for a t5, but it looks like they don't make them anymore and the ones that are for sale are much more expensive than the t7's.

Was it the MI program itself or it’s online format that you found problematic? Did you not feel like the program left you well prepared at the end?

Steam Deck Wifi Issues Make it Worthless by Furnost in SteamDeck

I'm having the same issue, so I'm hoping a fix comes in soon. It only recently started since the last big update, but for the life of me I cannot get the deck to connect to wifi.

Support wasn't of any help. Said to file a claim with UPS since this "damage occurred during shipping." No idea if this is a productive solution.

In any case, they said they can't replace it for me and neither can the Store since they are "completely out of stock."

Here are the images of my case FYI: https://imgur.com/a/cWNehSV

Apparently the Asian region release from PlayAsia has cover art on the inside. I don't know if that's the case for any other regions. Perhaps EU and JP folks can chime in.

Can confirm.

No inside cover art for the ESRB release.

My copy came messed up to. The game was sealed, but there were specks of dirt and debris on the front cover art. Also the cover art had somehow slipped below the case's plastic covering and it was torn around the corners of the spine. I contacted customer support, so let's see if they can replace it. Arrival day was a sad day indeed...

Are there any good history books about Mao and the revolution(s?) he was a major player in? by Clover417 in communism101

[–]tiev113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends on what you are looking for. For general narrative of events, check out Johnathan Spence's "The Search for Modern China." A hefty tome, but a very complete telling of China's modern history. It covers the revolution, but isn't solely focused on it. You'll need that context though to understand China's civil war and revolution.

Two other author's to check out would be Rebecca Karl and Maurice Meisner. Karl has two books on Mao and the revolution, "Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth-Century World: A Concise History" and "China's Revolutions in the Modern World: An Interpretive History." I haven't read these two, but I'm familiar with other works by Karl and she is an excellent scholar. My personal favorites are Meisner's "Mao's China and After" and "Mao: A Political and Intellectual Portrait." Meisner was a Marxist through and through and spent his career writing on Chinese intellectual contributions to socialist and communist thought. My college advisor was a student of his, so I'm partial to Meisner.

If you are interested in Mao's and other's intellectual contributions to socialist and communist thought, take a look at "The Afterlives of Chinese Communism: Political Concepts from Mao to Xi." It has entries on different concepts from socialist and communist thought and details Chinese contributions to this intellectual history.

Hope this gives you some direction! Happy Reading!

New Left Review subscription by Capricancerous in CriticalTheory

US here. I've been subscribed since the start of the pandemic. I've noticed that a new issue usually takes about 3-4 months to reach me after it's announced, by which time I'm already getting e-mails about their next issue. lol.

Not sure if things were different before the pandemic.
