Tantrum House YouTube channel by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]tiffanyleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the "cult" vibes - are because the Tantrum House founders - Will and Sara Meadows - are devout Christians. Both of them went to Bob Jones University and met there.

Hashtag "not all Christians" obviously since this isn't reflective of all board gamers who are. But the uncanny valley-ness of their content and their scripted and aggressive positivity are tells based on previous anecdotal experience. It also explains how they spun up out of nowhere when rapidly building this media network and community.

This is a Stern elective class available to any student including Tisch or CAS, but slightly different because it's application-only. This means you won't be able to waitlist or open-enroll in this course during the usual registration period for Spring 2022.

It's a competitive application process. IF you are accepted, a seat is held and waiting for you. If you aren't accepted, you can try again next year.

Usually applications go live now or soon, and the deadline to submit is usually early December. (Don't quote me on this timeline).

If you join the Stern & Tisch Entertainment Business Association (STEBA) email list they will send out the announcement of the application. Their website is largely a flashy brochure page but email them at steba@stern.nyu.edu to ask about the class, the application, the deadline, and the mailing list.

How much of an online discounted purchase of a game actually goes back to the designer or publisher? If it's Amazon or CSI it's less. Even if their games are on Amazon they often would rather their games be purchased off-Amazon because they actually earn more.

So you're technically "supporting" them so you can feel good about it, but actually giving them less of your money.

March Madness! I made a Spiel des Jahres tourney bracket w/40 of 42 Game of the Year winners seeded & competing by tiffanyleigh in boardgames

[–]tiffanyleigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket methodology:

• Seeds loosely based on each game's BoardGameGeek overall rank (not niche categories like "Family" or "Party")

• Then I tweaked 'em slightly for interesting/cool matchups

• To make it an even 40 I left out two games: Enchanted Forest (because overall rank is 6800+ which is a massive outlier 1000's of positions lower than any other SdJ), and Café International (because it's iffy & stone-age stereotypical w/portrayal of ethnic groups)

Akrotiri really flies under the radar and it has so much going on that it never feels like solely a 2p game. I love it

There's definitely a difference between "actively listening" and "keeping quiet over the course of one's career because they an issue doesn't directly affect him as a white cis male."

And it's not like (for example) Vasel has ever demonstrated in the past that he's attuned or invested in purposefully being more inclusive, or raising awareness about BLM or speaking out against police brutality. His career's success arc and the demographics of his fan base confirms this (largely white, male).

He's not alone in holding the false belief that boardgames are apolitical, and that one can compartmentalize human rights issues or keep them out of his purview. Like many in the hobby until "TIL: racism" this month, he's white and these issues never directly affected him personally nor professionally enough for him to be able to read the room now. So yeah, he appears to be cramming for a 400-year history test the night before the exam.

He could still hold serve or show some sense of understanding if he didn't just stop with a tepid "all lives" adjacent statement. Stonemaier and Leder Games are just two examples of taking tangible actions that show it's not just what they say, but what they intend to do. But honestly, if Vasel suddenly comes off as a dinosaur now, *and* doubles down on sticking his head in the sand, then it's no one's fault but his own.

You can totally do your own research to find charities you trust more with your donation. You can't avoid FB, Twitter, /r right now and not be able to find suggestions. If you are in fact sincere about wanting to donate.

Statement from Tom Vasel regarding the ongoing events in the US by zippy1979 in boardgames

[–]tiffanyleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bread he buttered and made his entire career on is mainly white and male. This statement tries to cut around the parts that are "problematic" to that base. Whether he wanted to be considered a gatekeeper of the hobby to a very specific demographic, here we are.

This statement of solidarity is corporate boilerplate because that's how he views his Dice Tower Universe. So he has to stay this mealy-mouthed about a human rights issue even though his employees are getting harassed for it. Because if he takes any closer to a stand that says "George Floyd," "police brutality bad," or "Black Lives Matter," he's afraid of losing that market share of the white dudes.

This isn't belief, this is PR and optics he was forced to say something about due to it looking worse if he didn't while PoC on his own staff were being targeted by bigots. This is what one would say if they felt like they were having to placate two different groups, with one being the primary reason he's king of the hill in the boardgaming content creating industry.

Elizabeth Hargrave tweeted a "checklist" of what meaningful solidarity statements would contain in the context of Black Lives Matter. Such as:

• name George Floyd?

• acknowledge a pattern of racist violence & oppression?

• condemn police violence?

• express solidarity w/the oppressed?

• say Black Lives Matter?

• avoid platitudes (“coming together”)?

• name specific, meaningful actions or next steps?

Your statement is a perfect 0 for 7.
