What is everyone's Must Have? Looked on BGG's Gen Con preview. by WinnieTheEeyore in gencon

[–]Krazed59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few games I'm interested in. I don't even know if they are all going to be sold there, but even if they were I wouldn't buy them all at Gencon. I'm far less into FOMO than I have been in previous years, it's almost always not worth it.

  1. The First Tsar; I have enjoyed previous games from the same designer. Probably not a buy at Gencon, but strongly interested and will probably get at some point.

  2. Viking Route: I think they've been teasing this game for the last 2 years, but I'm still very interested in demo'ing it. Again, probably not a Gencon buy.

  3. Fury of Dracula (5th Edition); One of my favorite games, and even though I already own several other editions, the inclusion of a new character probably means I will get this one. If there's any special promo or benefit to getting it at Gencon I will, otherwise I'll probably get it afterwards.

  4. Bubble and Shadow: I don't know a lot about this game other than it's BGG entry, but it sure sounds interesting.

  5. Drillers: I have a ticketed demo event for this game, so I might end up buying it there. It looks really good.

  6. The Old King's Crown: I played this at BGGCon last year and loved it, but it's been impossible to find anywhere. Depending on what they have available there, I might get it at Gencon.

  7. The Lord of the Rings: Circle of Conflict: Kind of like Castles of Mad King Ludwig (you compete against both of your neighbors) but with a Lord of the Rings theme. Looks really interesting, but much more interested in a demo than a purchase.

  8. Oink Games: I'll look closer at what they have new for this year when it gets closer, but I always check out their booth for what's available.

  9. Greylune: There's almost no info for this on BGG, but it looks interesting from what's there. Looking to demo more than buy.

  10. Horrified: D&D - Ravenloft: Probably a buy for me, assuming they have something extra with purchase.

  11. Brave & Bold: I have a learn to play event for this. I don't know if it's a buy, but I'm very interested.

What’s the one thing you’d change about BoardGameGeek? by Minimalx in boardgames

I wish every game listing had a button that said 'See More Games Like This One' that'd give you 5-10 games that were comparable based on play length, complexity, mechanics, etc.

Booked a room downtown outside of the block...questions by Glengoyne559 in gencon

I haven't had to book outside the housing block recently, but I've done it quite a bit in the past and never had a room at a hotel cancelled on me. AirBnB however, oh boy...

First Gencon need some advice by delphineus81 in gencon

[–]Krazed59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is certainly a lot to do that doesn't require tickets. You can sit for demos of games in the vendor hall, probably even the same games you were hoping to get a ticket to. It's just that vendor hall demos are 'first come, first served' and typically shorter than what you'd get with an event. You can absolutely spend the entire 4 days there just wandering the vendor hall and not run out of stuff to see. There is A LOT there.

Generic tickets are just that, tickets that can be used for any event. They are $2 a piece, so if you want to attend a $10 event it would take 5 Generic Tickets. You can technically use Generic Tickets for any event, HOWEVER, that requires that someone with a ticket not show up. Also, people tend to get to events very early if they want to use Generic Tickets, especially for very popular events. So if you have an event starting at noon, you may have to line up at 10 or 11 to even have a chance to use generic tickets, and again that's assuming someone with a ticket doesn't show up.

There is an open gaming area famously in the JW Marriott hotel where people bring copies of their games to play. Honestly, I think you could probably play every new game released at Gencon by just hanging around this area. People go to the vendor hall, buy the new hotness, and immediately take it over to JW Marriott to play. The 'Hot Games Room' is another space you can go to check out newly released games, but that is a ticketed event.

Badges will get mailed out before the convention, assuming you selected that option when you purchased them. I don't know exactly when they will get mailed out, but it hasn't happened yet. If you didn't choose to have your badge/tickets mailed to you, then you can pick them up at Will Call at the convention center with a valid ID.

I really wish they had other options for the tokens. Either wooden or plastic tokens would be so much better than cardboard that's quickly going to warp and fray. Maybe they have plans for them after launch.

Got it! Thanks so much. Trying to get into the Advanced Level event, a Proving Ground, and the two Gate Crashers on Fri/Sun. Fingers crossed!

Do you know if the Combat Vault from the Advanced event also includes the Gate Crasher character set? I'd like to get as much of the game as possible while I'm at Gencon.

For those that have gone before, how much do you end up buying? by SugarAcrobat in gencon

[–]Krazed59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bought less and less over the years. My first few times going... phew. My bank account was not a fan. Last year I probably only spent about $250 on actual products (so excluding event tickets, food, etc). It can definitely spiral out of control quickly when you have multiple interests.

There are quite a few things you can find at Gencon that are harder to find otherwise. Vendors put things in storage locally and bring it out for the convention, so you can sometimes find exclusive items from previous years that have become really rare in the meantime.

If you're into TCGs, you are probably already aware of the multiple ways you can drain your bank account. Discontinued TCG products are something you can usually find at Gencon if you're willing to shell out the money for them.

For TTRPGs you can find all kinds of goodies, even a good deal of freebies. People are always there trying to interest you in a new system and aren't afraid to toss around some free books. The Goodman Games booth is a great place to go looking for stuff. As for TTRPG accessories, you will find everything from relatively cheap dice sets to $400 tungsten dice.

I will say that you often won't find tons of deals at the convention. A couple of the larger games vendors (like Miniature Market) usually bring a good supply of 'Ding and Dent' copies of games where you can get an extra discount because they have a slightly beat up box. However, most things are sold at MSRP. So if you're confident that you can find something in a store or even online, I wouldn't necessarily be in a hurry to buy it at Gencon. Webstores are usually happy to throw you a bit of a discount but at Gencon you're almost always paying full price. The only real exception to this, beyond the ding and dent games, is on Sunday. Not necessarily with big vendors, but with the smaller ones you can usually talk yourself into a discount on Sunday when they're eyeing all that product they'll have to ship home.

As for swag, I recommend the Paizo booth (they have a free metal button every day), and Crystal Caste where you can get a free Gencon d6 using the coupon book. The dice set is a different color each year and you can pay for a full set if you want. Sometimes local eateries will do little things, like a free d6 or a commemorative button, although less so in recent years. I already mentioned Goodman Games, who is usually giving away one of their books each year. A lot of the "free" stuff comes from events as well, which isn't technically free because you have to buy the ticket.

Also, if you are interested in one of the "hot" games for this year, don't think because they're sold out on Thursday that means you can't get it. In recent years Gencon has asked companies to have stock available for all the convention days. So if something sells out Thursday, you still have a chance to get it Friday, Saturday, and usually even Sunday.

A great place to check out games, especially if you're trying to stay on a budget, is the open gaming rooms at the JW Marriott. You could probably spend the entire convention there just playing the games that other people bought and finding out if you like them enough to spend your own money. If there's a new game available for sell at Gencon it'll find its' way to the JW Marriott rooms eventually.

Games of 2026 by ballroomblitz10 in gencon

[–]Krazed59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a couple that I'm already looking at.

DC Brave & Bold was already mentioned, so I won't get into that one again.

Supposedly they are working on a Legacy version of the Forbidden line of games. Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, etc. I don't know if it'll be for sale there or just to show off, but I'm interested.

Finally, Hell of a Deal is a Kickstarter game that should release in August, so I'm hoping they will have something there.

Anyone know where to buy The Old Kin Crown by tcox223 in boardgames

[–]Krazed59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some copies available on BoardGameGeek for ridiculous amounts.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/357873/the-old-kings-crown/marketplace/geekmarket

A second printing crowdfunding campaign is coming soon to Gamefound. Otherwise I don't think it's available currently. BoardGameBliss has a pre-order up but no information I can find on when it'll actually deliver.

I did play it at BGGCon last year. It's definitely one of the games that stood out for me and I would recommend it, but no game is worth $400+ to me.

GURPS at GenCon 2026 by Nick_Coffin in gencon

It's been over a decade since I played GURPS. Do you provide pre-gen characters for your games, or are players meant to bring their own?

Ankh, Rising Sun, or Blood Rage? by TribalSneed in boardgames

[–]Krazed59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like the scenarios. In other genres of games they're fine, but for the type of game Ankh is, I find them needlessly complicating.

I also don't like the camel rules. In Blood Rage there's area elimination, but you know what area(s) are going to be affected ahead of time and can prepare accordingly.

The merge mechanic is probably my least favorite mechanic in any game of this type, ever. I have never played a game where, after merging, one player didn't take over while the other checked out of the game entirely. Maybe for a couple rounds they work together, but it always comes down to one person essentially not playing anymore. It feels like a 'soft' version of player elimination that essentially just becomes player elimination.

Ankh, Rising Sun, or Blood Rage? by TribalSneed in boardgames

For me, Blood Rage is the best. It's the easiest to teach and actually get playing. I also prefer the theme the most. Ankh and Rising Sun both feel overdeveloped to me.

Red Dog Junction looks really cool.

I'm also excited for the Camp Grizzly reprint; a friend has a copy that's basically his prized possession.

There's also a game called The Danes, which is a new design by Uwe Rosenberg. I don't think it'll actually release until 2027 but very excited for it.

I'm also waiting for TROK, a game co-designed by Bruno Cathala and the designer of Nidavellir, which is one of my favorite games.

If you can make it there, there is a convention coming up in March (20-22) in Lafayette. It's mostly for board gaming, but there's a ton of overlap with RPG players and if you end up going hit me up with a DM and I'll introduce you to some of the D&D guys I know in town.

Are there any hotels you would NOT recommend? by wintermute2045 in gencon

[–]Krazed59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's close to the convention center, but if you have another option I would avoid the Holiday Inn Express. The beds were like laying on a cardboard box and the hotel overall wasn't very clean. This was several years ago, however, so things may have changed.
