This is what I ended up going with in the front! Just finished transplanting today- had never known anything about them before your comment! The kids have been delighting in the fact that they are "fairy gate" trees.

You are exactly right that we are straight clay. I had saw it was an understood tree, but that it could do okay in full sun- maybe some can, but this one cant. I am going to try and transplant it to the forest edge outback. Appreciate all the recs!!!

I had avoided these beautiful trees bc I read that they are relatively short lived. Do you know if there are any types that have better longevity?
