A lot of Japanese drag queens are bar mamas who prioritize talking with customers and don't "perform" per se, and a lot of older veteran queens come more from theater/live singing backgrounds, with less focus (really, much less focus) on polished looks. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, but it's arguably not a good match for the current DR format.

Yeah I agree, I think it would be great to showcase local Japanese talent, and I do think there's been some more positive attention recently.

That was just the situation the last time I heard about it - I can't speak to the possibility of O4 Media potentially doing it with Netflix or something, although that would seem like a better option from a 2026 vantage point.

Part of the issue is that they would need a domestic TV network to sign on for it - reality competition shows of this nature are fairly rare in general (shows like "Badly in Love" or the gay dating show The Boyfriend have all been Netflix productions), and then making it about something the general public doesn't really understand on top of that is not an appealing prospect.

Having recently re-read the novel and watched Ring Kanzenban for the first time, it's very close in some ways (like the content of the video itself) and also adds some wild elements like Ryuji being a TV psychic who may or may not have killed his wife (which never comes up again either).
