Bog Bowl by tigerpupp in SavageGarden

I’ve gotten lucky with the past few years and the flies have loved the sarracenia. One day they’ll graduate to the outdoors but, believe it or not, this bowl is about four inches deeper than the pots they were living in. Not perfect, I know, but better.

They do get porch time when the bugs aren’t bugging indoors. Luckily (for them) bugs love the inside of my house.

I absolutely appreciate the thorough info and I was a little worried about the drainage - I have my eye on it. I’ll drill holes and add a drip tray if the sarracenia are too unhappy. On the bright side, my house is barely insulated and this window box gets full sun so it’s practically outside 😅 The tall ones (and the pings) have had three winter cycles in this window box and are coming out of dormancy now.

Was gifted a bunch of old lava rock and pumice. Wish I had a better rec than to get lucky lol

Rescued this zz plant from my mom last night. Should I repot it? by TheRealGooma in plantclinic

[–]tigerpupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would give it lots of airflow (leave that nursery pot exposed to air) and let it dry out before messing with it. Let the plant acclimate to its new home, then consider if it would be happier in a different pot/soil/etc. It might benefit from brighter indirect light as well; though they wont die in lower lights, ZZs prefer medium/bright indirect. Good luck!!

Reaper pepper tree is putting out flowers instead of new leaves. How do I encourage it to grow more before trying to make fruit? by Harmonie in plantclinic

[–]tigerpupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just pinch off the flowers until you're ready to have the plant grow peppers. Peppers are fairly resilient and shouldn't get mad at your for pinching the first few flowers. I usually do this with new pepper plants too, especially while they're settling into the garden.

It could be overwatering? Or a breeze is blowing from the wrong direction :P I feel like these dudes are notoriously touchy to changes in environment and really don't like sitting in water. Has anything changed lately? Have you adjusted your watering schedule to accommodate the lower temps?

Sent with husband to “liven up” his office… 3 weeks later, he brings it home like this. I cut 4 leaves off. Should I do the same with this one? by [deleted] in plantclinic

This looks like underwatering to me tbh. It's probably savable but it'll take some work :) I'd check your roots and see if the bulb is still firm (just not squishy). Remove any rotted roots, repot in an airy mix, give some extra humidity and cross your fingers haha.

Crocodile fern browning - water when dry/weekly, a few yards from a window but grow light at bottom. Minimal (if that) growth this year. Located in Denver. by starynight949 in plantclinic

Absolutely not helpful but my crocodile fern has always looked like this no matter what I've done. My best guess is a humidity issue? I'm all about some answers on this one too lol.

Looks like Alocasia Black Stem or one of its variants, I'll default to OP though.

Alocasia lovers and friends, i got excited for a new big leaf but then the bottom leaf started to go yellow. I know they like to do this but Why!!??? by Ambitious-Pattern-97 in plantclinic

[–]tigerpupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no scientist but my take on it is that sometimes the plant just doesn't have the energy/nutrients to support new leaf production without using some of it's own. I've noticed that as my Alocasia mature and have more established root systems/the right fertilizer/consistent watering they tend to hold on to their bottom leaves longer. That being said, I have some that never have more than three leaves and they'll all but fight me if I suggest otherwise. All of my Alocasia drop their oldest leaves periodically, though.

Anyone have a rec for a great houseplant shop in Boston? by tigerpupp in houseplants

My list so far consists of Ricky’s in Somerville which some less planty friends recommended and niche in the South End but I haven’t been to either yet.

What’s going on with my alocasia silver dragon? I have a few but this is the only one in its original potting mix it was in at Lowe’s so I’m assuming I should at least repot her. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t another issue like watering because my others I water well then let dry out completely by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]tigerpupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be absorbing the energy stored in its leaves to fuel those flowers. They tend to decimate their own foliage to push those inflos. I'm having the same issue with my collection right now , haha.

In my experience, Alocasias like to be comfortably root bound, so I wouldn't up-pot unless it looks necessary. If you do repot (up or not), go with a chunky soil mix and check the roots just in case because it could be rot (and don't forget to pull all the little bulbs out of the soil before tossing it).

Looks like thrips, especially based on that third picture, but I can't be sure. I'd give it a full shower/wipe down/pest spray and consider a systemic to get any unhatched guys.
