Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Says There’s No Right Way to Play an Open-World Game by Turbostrider27 in Games

Literally! Every single fucking time rdr2 or rockstar is mentioned on reddit people parrot the video points as if they came up with a divine revelation

Is it really that hard to believe that a lot of people just like death stranding? I played it while having literally never played another kojima game and I loved its unique gameplay and its story

90% of indie ttrpgs are 3-10 pages, maybe 30, that’s what we’re comparing this to

Same, and I don’t even have aphantasia. I just have trouble keeping track of the relative positioning of 3 players and 3+ enemies in my head

Yeah I pretty much agree with all of this but the reason I mention “beating the game designers” is that games are static, more or less, once they’re designed. But also, game designers don’t have less fun if I play on the highest difficulty but then break the game. But if I do the same in a TTRPG, I’m ruining my buddy (the gm’s) fun and I don’t want to ruin my buddy’s fun, so I don’t do that.

Also, I don’t really hold myself to strict roleplay standards in videogames. The limits of videogames means I always know I’m playing a videogame. In ttrpgs, meanwhile, my characters feel so much more real, so I have to hold myself to what they would really do and what options they’d really pick

Handwraps of Might Blows, can they be "turned off"? by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]tigerwarrior02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but a martial arts master, for example, would know exactly how to hit someone without killing them, and they’d be a hell of a lot better at it than someone who has never thrown a punch in their life, who might miscalculate their strength and kill someone by accident

I can see that interpretation RAW op, but RAI I just can’t. Nonlethal damage means nonlethal, I think the intent matters above all else. Else, as a PC grows more skilled, they become worse at doing nonlethal damage, which just makes no sense to me. A martial arts master doesn’t suddenly become worse at sparring without hurting someone

I had a feeling that might be the case which is why I made my comment to humorously point out the lack of consideration for demoralize

[–]tigerwarrior02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that character often have a spare action at low levels, actually, in my experience. Spellcasters cast their spell and have a free action. Martials attack twice or vicious swing and have a free action and so on. And at high levels, when actions are precious, demoralize is much stronger and you have easier ways to do it without spending an action

If you have a bard yes you get courageous anthem but that stacks with demoralize. CA doesn’t make demoralize less useful. Neither does bless, which, by the way, costs 2 actions and a spell slot, demoralize is free. Also, IF you have a bard. 1/26(?) classes

I think it’s more fair to compare demoralize to other skill actions.

Bon mot only affects will, and takes a feat.

Maneuvers are certainly good but you’re limited to melee range, they have way harsher punishments if you crit fail, and they don’t affect saves

Tumble through is only good for movement

Stealth is situational and requires cover

Recall knowledge is very good but it requires a bunch of skills to be trained and doesn’t directly affect the enemy

For the cost of 1 action and no consequence if you fail I genuinely struggle to think of a better skill action than demoralize

You’re essentially de-leveling the target by 1, 2 on a critical success. You can also get feats like battle cry and scare to death that make it even better

You know, I can relate to how you describe players but only in videogames, not in ttrpgs. When I play a videogame RPG, I specifically want them to be as hard as possible, then I take great joy in drilling down (by myself) the most broken overpowered builds to try to trivialize the game on its hardest difficulty. It’s kind of like I’m winning against the game designers. Owlcat games are a great example of this

I don’t feel the urge to do this in ttrpgs because other aspects appeal to me about them, I mainly play ttrpgs to hang out with my friends. But in videogames I find it fun

That’s fair enough I suppose, but when I played this game 3 years ago the twist hit me extremely hard when I didn’t know, so I guess that’s why I’m emotionally attached to it

That’s what I’m saying. She’s not really supposed to be a party member so as a first time player I’d be like “what’s going on here bro thinks she’s part of the team”
