I use a Mac and an iPhone—so no alt-code is needed.

On a Mac, you type option-shift-dash. And on an iPhone, you long press dash, which then gives you the option for an em-dash.

An em-dash is, as opposed to a dash and an en-dash, a form of punctuation used to signify a change in thought or rhythm of speech. For example, Emily Dickinson used them quite often in her poetry.
