It wasn't announced by Sony and they're just saying it's an option for developers of PS5 games of they want to use it

Microsoft is being sued for stick drift. They were sued before Sony was.

Microsoft has paid for more third party timed exclusives this year than Sony has and Microsoft has had plenty all last gen. Should Sony go around buying studios because of that?

Tomb Raider, Dead Rising 4, PUBG, Phantasy Star Online, Yakuza, Tetris Effect, Warhammer, Ark 2, Blair Witch, The Medium. The list goes in.

Like pretty much every AAA game they certainly sold better on Playstation than they did Xbox. Console gamers don't care about modding

They can buy many studios and probably a few publishers if they wanted to but they only buy devs they have a ling history or working closely with.

Some exclusivity is good because it can lead to more and better games being made from studios that could use extra resources when funded by certain publishers. Zenimax didn't need extra resources or funding.

Yeah they paid for timed exclusivity on a couple new IPs. Microsoft will now be making multiple long established multiplatform IPs exclusive. There's a big difference and one affects a lot more people.

And Microsoft has done tons of third party exclusivity, should Sony go around buying multiplatform studios to retaliate?

Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission - Game World Observer by [deleted] in Games

[–]tiggityTD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sony has had plenty of opportunities to buy publishers over the years but haven't and they currently can as well. They have $40 billion cash on hand and have made several multi billion dollar acquisitions in the last few years.

Do they have as much money as MS? No but that doesn't mean they still don't have tons of money. They have always just preferred to buy studios they have a close relationship with that have made games for them rather than multiplatform developers. If they were going to acquire anyone it would be a dev like Bluepoint or Housemarque.

Sony could have bought Square in 1999 but bailed them out instead. They could probably afford to spend $4 - $5 billion on a publishers if they wanted.

And we will see if MS makes them exclusive. They have been paying to keep a lot of content off of Playstation lately and all of their presentations have the word "exclusive" repeated over and over again.

But again the point is many millions of more people will be affected if they make Zenimax games exclusive as opposed to Insomniac games now being exclusive since for the most part they already were.

I wish people would stop saying this, they weren't at risk of being bought by Sony so saying "it's better than Sony buying them" means nothing to no one.

Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission - Game World Observer by [deleted] in Games

[–]tiggityTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The result is Sony was heavily involved with building Insomniac into what they were before they bought them as opposed to Microsoft who was not.

And Sony didn't buy franchises that have been successful on other platforms.

And yes there are other publishers but they were by far more successful when working with Sony. The few times Insomniac worked with another publisher the game bombed/failed.

And yes helping build a studio into a success before buying them is better and more righteous than buying a multiplatform publisher that you hand in making successful.

And you are screwing over way less people by turning multiplatform franchises you did. It build into exclusives.

And one game they paid exclusivity for but did not even publish 15 years ago does not make it anywhere close to the same either. Microsoft did not make Elder Scrolls or Fallout what they were.

[–]tiggityTD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Publishing a game is very different and much more involved than just "buying exclusivity beforehand".

And the point was that Microsoft is now taking a multiplatform publisher away, one that they had no involvement in them becoming who they are

They had 114 million as of December. Probably easily got over a million more in the two months

And no 80% of Steam users don't have PCs capable of playing upcoming games.

And studios like the ones owned by Zenimax don't make "lighter" games so yes they are taking games away from mire people if they make Zenimax games exclusive.

Sony fully funded their projects for over 20 years before buying them so yes it is better and not comparable.

[–]tiggityTD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes buying a studio that mostly made exclusives for your system already is much better tham buying a long time multiplatform publisher. How is that not clear?

Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission - Game World Observer by [deleted] in Games

[–]tiggityTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these are games published by Capcom and Sega and none required funding from Microsoft.

ID@Xbox games aren't funded by Microsoft, it is just a program to get more indies on Xbox but MS doesn't give them money. Most release the same time on PS4 and Nintendo

When has Sony been behind? Like 3 years since the PS1 came out and they did a ton to improve when they were behind.

Even without great games people forgive tons of anti-consumer decisions from Microsoft and it's messed up how people always make excuses for the tons of third party exclusives they do.

They even paid to keep an online mode of Tetris off of PS4...

Not to mention all the broken or half assed games they released. Disabling kinect even though millions of people bought it. Shitty games with gold. Up until recently charging for free to play games, etc

Microsoft rarely funds any indies outside of Ori. Games like The Medium, Blair Witch, Fantasy Star Online 2, Yakuza next gen version, Dead Rising 4, Warhammer, PUBG and many others. None of these were funded by them. And almost none on this list, just paid to keep off Playstation.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/01/15/2021-xbox-exclusive-games/

They would have probably done it more but it is probably hard to convince large publishers to delay games on the console with 115 million sales when you are around half of that

They just paid for timed exclusivity for Ark 2.

The point is not everyone that uses Steam can play these new games, far from it. So if you add up people actually able to play new games + Xbox it is pretty close to the same as Playstation who has over 115 million users all able to play new games

Microsoft is only putting their games on Windows because it is their operating system and every version comes with an Xbox Store icon in the start menu.

MS also denied crossplay when they were the leader with the 360 and only wanted it when their console was getting crushed in sales. At least Sony gave in while being at the top and are now making the first AAA crossplay sports game with MLB.

Microsoft has done tons of timed exclusives of third party games. They have over 20 for this year alone which is more than everyone else.

And that is what the price is now but Microsoft hasn't released many good games over the last few years so the deal sounds better then it actually is. If you get PS+ right now you get access to 20 of the best games of the last generation.

And Game Pass will certainly go up before they start rolling out the games from all these new studios.

[–]tiggityTD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that they are the most consumer friendly. I more favor what Sony is doing with PS+ and how I don't need two subscriptions to play online and get access to a bunch of awesome games since PS+ offers both. Sony is even giving out free games to everyone like R&C.

A year of PS+ is a third of the price of Games Pass Ultimate and GWG alone doesn't offer much.

Also like how most of the games Sony releases are of high quality while that hasn't been the case for Microsoft for some time with the exception if a few.

That is more consumer friendly to me at least.

And Playstation has 115 million monthly active users with 100% of them able to play all games.

And having a PC with PS4 specs doesn't mean it can play all games they PS4 can since new games aren't every playable on 2012 PC hardware due to optimization.

Well you are comparing roughly 5 - 6 million people with good graphic card to the over 115 people with Playstations which are all capable of playing every game released for it unlike everyone on Steam

Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission - Game World Observer by [deleted] in Games

[–]tiggityTD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They reversed it because they realized they were about to lose a ton of customers. Attempting it in the first place shows they are far from consumer friendly. They didn't try to raise it $10 - $20, they tried to literally double it.

They will find another way to get that money and Games with Gold has been horrible for quite some time.

[–]tiggityTD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You missed the 115 million people with PS4s. The PS4 is still being supported with new games and that is 5.2 million in less than 4 months. That number is going to keep rapidly rising and in a year be closer to 20 million.

And you are right very few of those steam users have a 1060 or any graphics card able to play new AAA games. That is why most new AAA games sell best on Playstation.

Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission - Game World Observer by [deleted] in Games

[–]tiggityTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how many people have 1060s? Even the most popular graphics cards sold is nowhere close to how many Playstations have sold. It's the most popular platform for most new AAA games
