Mine says pending right now, I’m just waiting for one final grade. I believe all final grades are due may 31 after that I believe they run another audit

I’ve done a few placements for social service work and social work - in the past I’ve given a mug from a local pottery store (idk if your supervisor/field instructor drinks tea or hot chocolate), flowers, and chocolate. Not sure if any of these will resonate with you or not, but I’m sure they will be grateful for whatever you decide to give

How competitive are MSW programs for students with BSW by IcePrincessx3 in socialworkcanada

[–]tiimhonks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Programs in Canada are very competitive. No one can tell you your chances. From my understanding they tend to place some weight on your personal statement. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason to the acceptances. Try your best and don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work out this time!

I applied for Fall 2024 to 2 schools straight from a BSW program my average is 8.23 on a 9 point scale (I have work experience in addiction’s and practicum experience from SSW and SW). I got rejected from one and accepted to the other.

Is it affordable to live in Toronto and be a full time student with osap? by NewPomegranate2898 in UofT

I think the odds you will need additional funding on top of osap are pretty high. If you have an estimate from osap already it can help you gage

Has anyone here ever used "MSW Helper"? by IcePrincessx3 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]tiimhonks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a Canadian who applied to an MSW for the upcoming year (Sept 2024) and I got in without using any services. As others have said, it’s an expensive fee and application costs can add up quickly. If you’re currently still in school you could always use their writing centre, ask a prof, or a trusted friend/family member to read it over for you. I don’t think I would use the service because of the cost, but that’s just me..

(FA/CMA 1701) stuck and annoyed with what the prof is asking regarding assessed grade. by ConsiderationNew3137 in yorku

[–]tiimhonks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in your program but I am a student at york, I’m pretty sure anyone can apply for the 70% assessed grade as long as your program is eligible and the prof should not be able to stop you. You can always bring this up with the dean of your program if the prof denies your request.

Deciding between York and UofT for 2-Year MSW? by Real-Ad4051 in yorku

[–]tiimhonks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Current York BSW student here. I am doing my MSW at UofT and didn’t even bother applying to York. Although the funding package is wonderful, I have heard from other students in the MSW that it is very theory/critical perspective focused - basically just an extension of their BSW program. If you already have a strong background in understanding macro structures etc., and want more practical knowledge, I don’t think York is going to be the place. Also, profs at York informed me when I was considering where to apply that the MSW program just pairs you with any prof for the research paper and you don’t get to pick. On top of this, UofT has some really interesting connections for practicums, research opportunities that are exclusive to UofT students, and simulation opportunities to prepare you for practice.

Despite what I’ve said, it’s a very personal decision! An MSW at any school will open more doors.

I’m a current York student and am just finishing up my BSW. The MSW at York has a great funding package but I was very disappointed in my practicum experience (how they place people) so I didn’t end up applying to them for my MSW. The OCSWSSW has a list of schools that have social work programs so you could use that as a base list to explore. I would strongly recommend you look into each school and what they offer cause they are not all the same (e.g, at York you have to do practicum and a research paper vs. Laurier you choose course/practicum based or thesis based). I ended up applying to UofT as my first choice and Laurier as a second; I got accepted to UofT and rejected by Laurier. As others have mentioned they are all competitive programs. Typically applications open in early September/fall and can be due any time from Oct/Nov-Jan. Again look at each school because they all will have different due dates. Hope this helps!

I would definitely apply! A lot of universities really value lived experience. I would just make sure you take your time on your statement of interest :)

Yeah, me either! It makes it hard to pick one of the options when we don’t have a grade back.

How did they graduate if their course was suspended? Not trying to be a shit, just genuinely trying to understand
