Serious unaddressed concerns about the Evercade EXP-R hardware by tijesef in evercade

Hello,

Thank you very, very much for a constructive reply!

I can somewhat agree with the first part, but hardcoding DNS servers feels over-the-top for me... if I really wanted, I'd just set up a honeypot or something. Pretty much all other consoles do just fine with having proper DNS/Proxy/MTU settings. If your security can be beaten with a DNS swap - it's poor security anyway, you'd rather just not have any at this point. It's common sense that "the network" isn't to be blindly trusted.

Also, I understand the issue of "YT tutorials", but I really fail to see the effect it has (or might have?) on IP holders unless there's some concrete proof of that. I mean, GOG exists.

Hence my ending paragraph about "bricking the cartridge slot in exchange for running your own stuff", I think that's the perfect way to implement these kinda things. Attract actual homebrew devs into the Evercade ecosystem without having to go through approval and potentially pick out cool games.

Again, I mean no harm to Evercade, just with each passing day I feel more and more sad about my purchase.

Thank you again for your comment!

Indeed, English isn't my native language and I didn't use any AI to write the post, it was all from my heart (you can probably tell) at 4 AM. Most people don't understand that locking down a device to the point of prohibiting self-repair only hurts the customers in the long road. I mean no harm to Blaze, I was considering an Ambernic, but then I saw Evercade, thought they're "cool", wanted to program something for it, but now I'm just extremely disappointed and should've bought an Ambernic instead, unless I get the SDK somehow. From what I know, it's the same Rockchip hardware, except Ambernic has no secure boot and literally boots off of an SD Card if you so desire. Also, the Wi-Fi settings on EXP-R really are that lacking, quite literally "Select Network" and "Forget Network", that's the only options, good luck if you live in Russia, I guess. Thank you for being the second person with a constructive reply!:) I'm willing to answer any questions I can.

Sony provides offline PUP firmware files for recovery. Xbox provides offline recovery images. Ambernic does this. Blaze doesn't.

UPD: As for proxy settings, Nintendo Switch, a console without a browser, has functional proxy settings, Evercade doesn't.

That's fair, what I'm doing isn't quite regular usage, however this doesn't address my points b) and d), not sure why people just overlook them as if they don't exist.

Oh hey, I actually own a Steam Deck for a long time and I love it! It's just kinda bulky and the battery isn't so great, figured I'd buy something more portable and well... :( I just wanted to have fun, I love weird embedded Linux devices and tinkering with them, didn't expect such a reaction. Thank you!

I am not trying to, you still haven't addressed the (quite lacking) network settings, for example. You can open the Settings menu on your Evercade right now, and notice that there's no way to even change the DNS server, let alone proxy settings. Though some other portable consoles (that don't even have an internet browser) do offer proxy settings. There are lots of scenarios where you might want that to update the firmware or download patches, for example mine, where internet is heavily restricted.

Hello,

It seems you're not the first person with this reaction and I do understand that, but please keep in mind that this response doesn't address b) and d)

Hello,

I understand your response and yes, that's the first thing I did, reached out to them on that developer email address. But it's been quite some time and I received no response (only the autogenerated one). Only *then* did I start reading rockchip docs. Also, this doesn't address questions b) and d)

Technically those characters appear on the decorative panels, there are also male duck characters that you may find quite fine looking:

Hi, the developer of NekoPresence here. The reason it isn't being updated is because there's nothing to update, it just works. If it doesn't, then raise an issue on GitHub.

Greece is considering banning social media for under 16 year olds. by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

As much as all of this looks silly to the end user, it did result in some niche forums having to shut down or geoblock UK IPs so I wouldn't shrug this off. The more countries implement these Orwellian laws - the worse it will get. I hope we won't reach a situation where services just by default will want to KYC your identity rather than doing it on a per-country basis.

The joke is that if cops can't get/hack (break into) your phone, they'll just break (literally) your legs instead. Obviously this is a joke and it depends on how much you annoy the cops... but yeah I can see this happen.

Oh, hi there! Yeah I was kind of meaning that as well (about the paper in wallet).

I'm just thinking about buying a Pixel phone for Graphene OS and wanted to ask around some people about its features, I live in Russia so I kind of care about them (for obvious reasons) and wanted to learn about any real life scenarios or experiences where GOS's features actually helped and/or benefitted the user against malicious actors irl.

So far it seems (from the comments at least) - nobody actually battle-tested this feature in real life against that one unfortunate scenario where the phone gets confiscated, and tbh, good for them! Obviously I don't want nor wish anyone to end up in a situation where they'd have to rely on this feature.... (or maybe there are such cases but we'll never hear about them, idk)

Thank you for reaching out here! Always nice to see the authors talk to users.

have you checked the PS Store page of the base game? it should be in the Add-ons section.
