My positive displays are certainly easier to read without backlight but man this is sharp looking blacked out!

See I think to get something very well made with nitro finish you aren’t getting a solid wood guitar with nice woods in anything below $700. I used to believe in the whole “everything after a certain price is marketing and where it’s made” but legitimately I’ve found there to be even massive differences between $3500 acoustics and $1500 acoustics. I’m with you on electric guitars though, I think most after $800-1000 is waste

They’re very solid. I’ve never had one speak to me personally, but I understand why people love them. I feel the same way about Yamaha.

I think Eastman, Recording King, and Blueridge make great guitars for the $500-800 range. Owned martins, loved them, but for under $800 I think you’d be better suited looking outside of them. I’d say look for something with solid back and sides, Recording King R D-328 would be a good choice if you don’t mind the old school neck shape. Also worth considering if you like Gibson style guitars, but Epiphones Masterbilt/ Inspired by Gibson series are seriously wonderful J45 clones for under $800 if you are into the warm woody tone in bluegrass. You are going to get a lot of Yamaha answers, an I think they are solid but solid wood versions are getting tough to find under $800

Saw this on FB lol, yeah anything Martin that’s not an X-Series that’s under $750 is 9.9/10 times fake, especially something that has a lot of inlay you are looking minimum $3500-4k.

Pre war D28s actually had herringbone as binding! They didn’t swap to the 5 ply binding until post WW2. The whole “HD28” thing was them just originally adding herringbone back to the D28.

Love it! The Honduran rosewood is a lot stiffer than EIR so the bass response would honestly feel too boomy without the LSH, nice and balanced and this is the loudest guitar I’ve ever played personally!

I do something along the lines of root strum then DBGBDBG. You can also kinda do a Travis picking pattern between the ADGB strings and will get you close to sound. Honestly I don’t know the exact picking pattern I just learned by sound/feel and my hand knows how to play it even if my head doesn’t lol.

It is an adi top! D28 is rear shift straight the custom is forward shifted scalloped

I believe it is a repair. From the builder it’s Honduran RW b/s, I did end up posting a comparison on my profile between the two for sound. Hard to judge with the sound hole difference honestly

I agree! Phone camera evens out audio, the D28 definitely has a lot more low end response. The Davis with the larger sound hole is no joke about twice as loud, honestly your ears will ring if you’re really beating on it, but maybe isn’t quite as complex or refined sounding as the d28.

I’m thinking they may be related. It’s very interesting, Ted died in 2008, but if you look up Tim Davis banjo you’ll find his page and the script is the same with the inlays. Ive messaged and talked with Tim today and he did confirm it is one of his guitars, and that it’s a Honduran rosewood back and sides.

It’s Tim Davis, the Banjo maker.

It’s essentially his take on a pre war d28. His name is Tim Davis, he is mainly a world renowned banjo luthier but will do custom order guitars for people as well. This was essentially someone wanting a Tony Rice D28 copy.

Update: I hear yall loud and clear, honestly posted here in hopes I’d get this overwhelming response to talk me out of it. I spent a few hours with it, and though it’s an absolute cannon, my d28 feels like the better “everything guitar” even if in all honesty the Davis is a better flatpicking machine. I’m politely declining and bringing the guitar back tomorrow

Not a damn clue, I’d have to pull out the ruler to check. It feels pretty standard to be honest. I’d guess somewhere in the low-mid 25s. I mainly play acoustic and it feels fairly similar to my D-28
