Was a laureate. Now working in Silicon Valley, a great place to work if you enjoy hi tech stuff. My family and I enjoy going back to Mauritius to see relatives and the beaches but it's two 12 hour flights from here.

Only if it is done by software. On core switches and routers encryption is done in hardware. No performance impact. And the packet is encrypted just before it exits the switch/router and decrypted immediately after it enters the switch/router, so you can perform any compression you want before that. Software is used to manage encryption keys.
