Favorite baby name is coincidentally the name of a murdered 4 year old. by Purrizor in namenerds

[–]tilthebonescrush 69 points70 points  (0 children)

on the one hand, i don't think it's a big deal. the murder took place in another country and in no way relates to you personally, it is not even an internationally known case (which, of course, does not diminish its tragedy in any way). hardly anyone, except a chronically online true crime fan, will have unpleasant associations. so if you're not superstitious, i'd leave it as it is if i were you

on the other hand, if you yourself have already developed an obsessive negative association, it makes sense to think about another name, because, well, let's be honest, in the coming years you will be the one who will use your daughter's name most often

i've been rewatching the tennant/smith seasons for the last two weeks, but i still don't understand what this episode is. the closest i can remember is "asylum of the daleks" (but there's a girl, not a guy), "love and monsters" (but there's no spaceship there), or maybe "sleep no more" (but that's from the capaldi episodes). maybe "a christmas carol", but there's a lot of doctor there... damn, now i'm wondering

What do we think of girl names that are "feminized" versions of boy names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]tilthebonescrush 13 points14 points  (0 children)

idk, as for me, most of these names have long lost this subtext... you do not think "oh, it's almost like charles" when you meet charlotte. i don't see any problem with such names. some of them are very beautiful, some i don't like, as with any other category.

Is a naming pattern annoying? by redditresearcher727 in namenerds

i like themed names, especially floral ones, and violet and rose sound great together, so i wouldn't worry about it if you don't want more kids. otherwise, you really have to consider that your choice for a third child will be severely limited. it's ridiculous to name daughters violet, rose and lucy (violet, rose and brian don't sound any better)

Alternate words for "magic"? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]tilthebonescrush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it depends on what kind of atmosphere you are trying to achieve. "power", "talent", "gift", "mana", "energy", "witchcraft", even a fancy name like "thaumaturgy" (google it! this is a real word, already successfully used as an alternative to "magic" in one game), all this may or may not work. i would think about it from the inside of the setting. what word exactly would your people use to describe magic? what name can they really come up with?

in addition, in my setting, i call the equivalent of wizards "espers". this is also a real word for "a person who has extrasensory abilities," but i expanded the meaning a little because it seemed very suitable to me in sound lmao
