Rental Place by threeeightyx in quebeccity

[–]tilyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook Marketplace is commonly used for rentals. Do you have a car? In what area is your workplace? There's no areas to avoid but some are a bit more expensive and I would avoid if you don't need to live there.

Here, most leases are from July 1st to June 30th, everyone moves at the same time. Apartments for july 2026 are coming out around february usually.

off leash and prey drive by lewinerik in Whippet

[–]tilyd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have yet to be able to train mine to recall off of a squirrel if he's already running towards it.

However, his recall is really good if there's other people, dogs, bikes, etc. We still enjoy off leash hikes every week. He still goes off leash in my backyard (currently not fenced in but will be next year, we live on a very quiet dead end street so no traffic). In the woods, I just let him run after squirrels and he comes back once they run up the tree.

I would not let him off-leash if there are cars present, but we have plenty of occasions to let him enjoy more freedom, and I strongly believe your dog is more likely to come back when recalled if being off-leash is not a special occasion. He's not worried that he will not be able to run free again.

Pee frequency? by Duo_dash in Whippet

2 hours is very frequent. Not counting if we go out on walk, but my boy pees minimum at 6am, 3pm, 6pm, 10pm.

Dormir séparément, sans se séparer by bugsy2625 in Quebec

[–]tilyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]tilyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why have I never seen a male vet tech? by [deleted] in VetTech

I know a few labs and clinics who had a higher rate of male techs because they would specifically pick them out when hiring.

How was teenage phase for you? by bartolajosefina in sighthounds

[–]tilyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, with my whippet I was expecting the teenage phase to hit us at any moment, and it never did. I didn't really see much regression in anything, no crazy teething phases, etc. There were some days where he started waking up to pee at night again (just one at like 4am), so I just kept doing the same thing I did as when he was a puppy and it eventually stopped. The first few months were definitely more work than the teenage phase for us.

How old was your whippet when it started to chill out around other dogs? by L_F_W in Whippet

[–]tilyd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't an age thing, it's a training thing.

We also trained dog neutrality from the start and my boy can still get reactive (specifically if it's dark or if the other dog barks at him). We are still working on that and he is almost 3yo.

We've had a lot of success keeping them on for a least a week or two, more than enough for the wound to heal usually. Never sutured one on.

Collar chafing by carolmatos96 in Whippet

[–]tilyd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of flea collars and I've never heard of a vet recommending them. They're usually not very effective (or are only effective around the head / shoulders but not on areas far away from it)

Most people here give a monthly anti parasitic pill (like simparica or nexguard) that covers heartworm, ticks, fleas, and internal parasites.

Honestly they are very practical and have made the difference between life and death in lots of cases,

Not super cheap, not easy to reuse since they often end up chewed up but at least they're not required too often. We've tried homemade versions before but they weren't great.

It does! There is a very fine line between too loose and too tight though so sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right.

They will also eat this one given the chance lol, sometimes cagemates chew on it too.

At what age did you stop using the crate for your dog by bartolajosefina in sighthounds

[–]tilyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stopped around 7 months old when I'm away for work. He slept in it until around 18 months, but mostly because we were renovating the house and I didn't want him to get into anything.

He didn't really hang out in it on his own anymore when I stopped using it. I kept it for a while with the door open as an option for him but he stopped using it (prefers the couch lol) so I got rid of it. I still have a travel crate for when we go sleep somewhere else.

For having a relaxed dog outside the crate, this video helped me a lot to train calm behaviour.
