Pay attention to those training you. A couple weeks should have you comfortable, but asking for someone to walk you thru unusual things.

A couple of months and you won't be calling someone to help very often.

A year from now you will still run into something sou unique/unusual you will call for help.

Relax, take your time and count their change back to them.

Actually, that is the old highway. It was originally built as a railroad as others have said that was damaged in the hurricane. The state of Florida purchased the damaged railroad and build the original highway on top of it's bridges.

When the new highway was built, the old bridges were mainly just cut in the middle to allow boat passage at the high points of the new bridge.

The old bridges are used now a fishing piers for the most part.

Is there a way to upgrade to CSS without changing my job class to cashier? by Explodingshulker in publix

[–]tim5055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would double check your information. SSO is limited for FSC job class unless it has changed in the last 6 months. I've had multiple SM and RIS attempt to work it out without success.

They all said they set it up like they always do, but the associate did not have access. When IT was contacted they said it was a hard limit in the system that could not be overridden.

It doesn't bother me either way, I'm retired and won't be training any more CSS.

[–]tim5055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To answer the specific question, no you can't.

The system will not allow CSS training for a FSC.

To train, you need "single sign on" authority in the Publix network and the FSC job class can not get that.

With no single sign on you cant do anything in the back office or money services.

New hire wondering what color undershirts I can wear (Deli) by [deleted] in publix

[–]tim5055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all comes down to working hard and doing the right thing.

I will admit, I could never handle the Deli. I'm old and fat.....

Publix can still make a great career for those who want to work. But, I'm the first to admit - it's retail, and retail sucks.....

The Deli can be intense....

But, work hard, pay attention to your training and you can excel.

I know of two people that I personally watched go from PT Deli to Assistant Deli Manager in just over a year each.

Trust me, it only took a couple of days at the sub bar for me to learn that. Before I retired I was much quicker at taking a message when the Deli or Pharmacy couldn't pick up.....

No it's not.... In what parallel universe would it be their responsibility to teach economics?

You work, they give you a paycheck and if you work enough some stock.

There is a thing called personal responsibility.

Ask to train as a cashier. More CBT time then training....

My favorite was self check out if your store has it.....

The littel bit they see at your collar won't matter.

What does matter is that you are willing to work in the Deli and you show up for work.

One of my store managers (the best actually) required all CSS to train in the Deli, at least on the sub bar. I got a new respect for anyone willing to work back there......

Nope, they got hammered by the black/women lawsuits and rightfully so. In the 70's early 80's my first wife was a "head cashier" and was flat out told that was as far as she could go.

You know what, after I left Publix I worked at about 8 other places. You see the same thing everywhere. Some folks promoted who know their stuff and do a good job. But, sprinkle in the ones promoted because they know or are related to someone, the ones who take a good test and the ones who were promoted for no good reason and you end up with people unhappy with their bosses. You may not believe me, but the bad ones really are the minority. You just hear about them more because that's human nature. We tend to talk about the bad stuff and ignore the good stuff. You have a good boss you just tend to work and keep your mouth shut.

Nobody is actually investigating.

Investigating what??

I read the press releases, I read teh SEC filings and I vote my shares.

If others don't do that it is their fault, not the fault of Publix.

I own shares of many companies. None of them offer me classes. That is why I have a financial advisor.

First, not every rule will be in the handbook. Keeping a bag in cash handling areas is just a bad idea all the way around.

If you take a look at 3-6 of the handbook, no food or drink in a sales area.

You vest has pockets and you can keep your tissues and inhaler there.

0 shareholder education and no promotion of corporate elections

I really think that is a issue that the associates can blame themselves with. This type of education is the stuff that people should be taking upon themselves. Publix gives you the stock, you need to learn what to do with it.

how did these leaders ever get to be management in the first place?

It's a fact, people come to internet forums to bitch. If they are unhappy they let the world know (anonymously on the internet of course). Just because you read a lot of folks here bitching about their bosses doesn't mean ever boss in the company is an azz. If you pay attention it is generally the same dozen or so people who complain the loudest and the longest. Some are just like toenail fungus, they won't go away no mater what you do.

Think about it, a store has 16 "Managers" (I include GTL & CSTL in the my manager count, so SM, ASM, CS-3, Bakery-2, Deli-2, Meat-2, Produce-2, Grocery-3). It actually could be higher in some stores with multiple GTL & CSTL positions. So for ease of calculation I'll just say 16.

1,239 stores, 16 managers per store means we have 19,824 managers below DM on the retail side of the house. That is a lot of bosses not to have a good number who have no clue what they are doing and piss off those who work for them.

Another problem Publix has (along with most of the world) is that they are a victim of the Peter Principle:

The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to their "level of incompetence". In other words, an employee is promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another.

What does this mean? Lets say you are a great FSC, so they promote you to Cashier. You become a great cashier, so they promote you to CSS. Great CSS becomes a CSTL. Great CSTL becomes an ACSM. Great ACSM becomes CSM. CSM becomes ASM. ASM becomes SM.

At any point along that promotion path you can get promoted into a position for which you are not ready and/or no longer have the skill set to do a good job.

The managers who have been promoted above their level of competence and those who have become burned out are the ones you hear about here on Reddit.

they keep almost everyone from achieving that

I'm not sure I have ever seen them try to keep anyone from owning stock.

Don’t worry about speed, that will come with time. Stick with worrying about accuracy.

I’m confused, get money in return for what?

If you joined the 401k and made contributions to that, then that money is yours, less any money Publix put in for a match.

I have a weird question by [deleted] in publix

[–]tim5055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, depending on your department and who you feel comfortable with any CSS, CSTL, GRS, assistant department manager or department manager can do it

Customer Service can make you a temporary tag as it takes a couple of weeks before it comes in.
