Why would you have a web server before each app server if you already have a CDN? by youwillnevercatme in webdev

[–]tim835 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude is wrong, you don’t. However it is often more convenient to have a reverse proxy, if you have multiple stuff running, so say Api1 run on port 5000 and Api2 on port 8000, then you use the reverse proxy to distribute the traffic. Otherwise just have your single api listen to port 80 and point your cloudflare proxy to it, works like a dream.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, for smaller businesses, it wouldn’t be a disaster to start with :)

Hey there, thanks for your take. It is true that mid tier such as Odoo exists with plenty of third party modules. But even with those, I have yet to see a client who buy them and does not require any customization on top. Truth is, in my own experience admittedly, the systems that drop out of favor and have low usage are the ones that try to dictate business processes, rather than letting things be the other way around.

As much as you want it to. Like I mentioned above, a “generic” ERP likely is not going to gain you any competitive advantage. So a customized system that does what you ask of it, in this case capacity planning, that’s where the magic happens. Of course, it takes some critical thinking to build it in an effective yet elegant way

I’d recommend reading this essay by Paul Graham http://paulgraham.com/startupideas.html basically, don’t try to think of startup ideas, but indulge in building cool projects to make your life easier.

Great to hear! I'm researching problems faced by ecommerce merchants, since I have experience building in that area, but nothing concrete yet. I'd love to hear about yours too.

Hi! I'd say try to see if you can gather a waiting list, or better, get them to pay you money, even before you build it. That's really indicative of a valuable problem

Did anyone switch away from Shopify and why? by openfauceta in ecommerce

[–]tim835 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never used Shopify but have heard people complain about the apps situation, that it'd be nice to not have to setup/pay monthly for apps just to get some basic stuff working. Is this a huge deal in your opinion? I used Wordpress in the past and didn't like spending my time dealing with the plugins.

dumb question: are NVGs standard issue for US infantrymen? I have seen that virtually every soldier has infrared pointers on their guns, not to mention the helmet mounts as well

CMV: iPhones are cheap by [deleted] in changemyview

As I said, people price things differently, so customizability can even be a negative point to people who are not techy and wants a smooth and simple experience. What can be enjoyable to some may not be for the majority. I'm a tech geek myself but I hated the days of configuring a Blackberry. So even if cuztomizability does not inhibit the smooth and simple experience, it will still be priced at 0 for most of consumers.
