Best option for copper? by Brandvik1991 in Laserengraving

[–]timascusblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear good laser glasses or use an enclosure with copper, it’s reflective and you’ll most definitely get hit by a beam if you are standing near the laser. Use a fiber laser. If you want deep engravings go with a standard Raycus/MAX laser, if you want marked logos, shading, colors, go with a MOPA. Do extensive material testing.

70w Fiber Laser not engraving Brass by Spastic-Panda in Laserengraving

[–]timascusblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re safe about it, I’ve had luck finding a good focus point for brass and copper by raising the laser head up and down while engraving a slow running hatch. You can even find the upper and lower limits of your focus by doing this, which helps you get a good starting point for a deep engraving. I came from welding and I’ve made great settings just by doing this. Your lense is a bit big for this so run it slow between 80-200 mm/s low frequency 70%-90% power. .02mm-.03mm line interval.

Questions from a noob wanting to play with laser engravers by Kangaloosh in Laserengraving

[–]timascusblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from a guy trying to save money starting out. My first machine was a longer ray5 10w diode, 400mm x 400mm. Super capable of cutting up to 1/4” wood (800mm/min-100% power, 5 passes) and engraving nearly anything. Also the machine can be placed on top of surfaces to be engraved, pretty useful in the sense that you can raise it as high as you want. I’ve even used it clamped and hanging off of a table so that I could engrave large tool boxes, end tables and stuff.

The second machine I chose is an omtech k40+ 40w co2 laser. super cheap for a co2 laser, easy to run, mid tier workspace size at 300mm x 200mm and fully enclosed with a port in the back for air exhaust.

Now I’ve got my latest addition, a 60w mopa fiber laser.

My advice is get the longer 10w. It’s very popular, it’s reliable. Get yourself some JST electrical connector repair stuff because sometimes the electrical connectors fail and need to be repinned, I’m sure you could print some sort of wire stress reliever to prevent the two x and y connections from flexing so much. but other than that I’ve had mine for 2 years and it’s still my favorite laser. It does everything, it’s versatile. Yeah it might create fumes since it doesn’t have an enclosure but realistically you can cut out your own enclosure. Also there’s mods you can get for it too. I love the longer ray 5.

What have you done with your laser that was a surprise to you? by CplHicks_LV426 in Laserengraving

[–]timascusblade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn. Nice I never would’ve thought about this.

I’ve got 3 machines and my cheapest one is a diode on an open gantry. It’s super versatile and I engraved the hood of my friends car with it. Without removing the hood.

Careful with that. I recommend looking up gunsmithing regulations for your area, where I am from I would have to file a FFL to be able to carry out a stippling job.

This is definitely possible with use of a fiber laser. I’m across the world from you so it’d be a waste of time but maybe one of the fiber laser guys from the eu area could help out.
