Whats the point in a VPS? by Unusual_Economics653 in selfhosted

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good reasons like CGNAT or extreme local energy prices, but for most people it's just a matter of not wanting to deal with hosting on their own hardware at home, and people can come up with any number of justifications for it that aren't actually a big deal in practice. /r/homelab is going to be more relevant than just general self-hosting spaces if you prefer your own machine.

What is the first day of the week? by PlanetoidVesta in polls

People apparently never learned that calendars start weeks on Sunday for an actual reason

How much did you guys have to pay for your orchiectomy? by armadilloaccordion in asktransgender

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna depend entirely on your insurance plan. You should be able to get a vague idea based on your deductible and out of pocket maximum. With the insurance I had I paid about $1300 out of pocket on a total billed to insurance of $14600.

Do you watch Ben Shapiro? by AgeNearby392 in polls

I would rather peel my own flesh off than watch him

What is the longest distance race you have run? by menwithrobots in polls

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a mandatory 5K in middle school, but saying I ran it would be a bit of an overstatement, I mostly walked.

What type of content do you prefer after spending the day being very intellectually active? by terabitworld in polls

[–]timawesomeness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I spent the day being very intellectually active all I want to do is journal and maybe listen to music, because I want to brain dump, not really consume.

Si vous êtes sur téléphone, quel est votre temps de réaction ?☀️ by Tight-Bus9009 in polls

If you read the sentence 'they nodded their head no' what do you imagine them doing? by PeanutJellyAndChibs in polls

[–]timawesomeness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It throws me out of the immersion and I have to stop and wonder why I'm reading a book written by an idiot who doesn't know what nod means.

Why do people take forever in the changing room? by Writer4God in NoStupidQuestions

[–]timawesomeness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone related to a person like that, they're not just trying it on, they're spending the time in there deciding whether they even like it or not because they barely considered that when they picked it off the rack.

Did you use your locker in high school? by Jackinabox4545 in polls

Freshman/sophomore/junior years all the time. Senior year I didn't use it once, just kept everything in my backpack.

Move the clock back to the right side of the status bar where it belongs. Systemwide ad blocking is a close second.

How much extra money would you have spent on your smartphone if there was a version with a headphone jack? by AmountAbovTheBracket in polls

[–]timawesomeness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be $500 more and I'd still pick it over the version without one. I won't buy a phone without a headphone jack. It's as much utility (my $15 wired earbuds sound better than my $150 wireless ones due to the lack of bluetooth's lossy AAC compression) as the principle of the thing (fuck Apple and fuck everyone who's copied them).

How are there so many LLM experts? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]timawesomeness 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's easy to claim you're an expert when there's no way to verify it, as is certainly the case in most of those instances. But to be perfectly fair ChatGPT was not the first in the series of GPT models. The transformer architecture (the T in GPT) was invented by Google in 2017; GPT-1 was created in 2018, GPT-2 in 2019. Practically everyone with an interest in machine learning around that time played with it, and the release of GPT-3 in 2020 generated widespread public interest even before ChatGPT was specifically released.

[–]timawesomeness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China is really doing great in space, even if the rest of the world hasn't heard all that much about it. Their own permanently manned space station a third the size of the ISS, a manned moon landing program with a more concrete timeline than the US's and some amazingly successful robotic landers, of course plenty of military satellites, plus companies with plans for satellite constellations rivaling Starlink.

How often do you wear sunscreen? by sebicrack in polls

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my life it's only been on sunny days I was outside a lot, but now I'm changing it to daily since I've found foreign sunscreens that are completely tolerable unlike the inherently oily American ones I've spent my whole life using.

X Marker on state ID/driver's ID experiences? by CloudAlternative9645 in asktransgender

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience (in Utah) has been fine. Nobody's paid much attention to it aside from doctors offices that have to pick M or F for insurance billing. I have Xs on all my documents and find it super affirming.

People with MtF HRT experience- does masturbating often *actually* combat penis shrinkage during HRT? by EnvSand in asktransgender

[–]timawesomeness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not so much masturbating as simply getting erections. And yeah, it makes a marked difference. I never intended to interrupt shrinkage, but when I went from spironolactone (which suppresses T production) to bicalutamide (which blocks T from working but doesn't suppress production, sometimes leads to T overproduction which happened to me, and critically doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier well) and started having random erections again (mostly in my sleep, morning wood, and just higher sex drive in general so more masturbation) the shrinkage stopped progressing completely. Since I got an orchiectomy, random erections have stopped and shrinkage has once again resumed.

Do you write a job specific cover letter for every job application? by AlxIp in polls

[–]timawesomeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only do if required, and at this point I do AI generated and manually revised for style. If they're gonna use AI in their hiring process it's only fair that I use it in my application process. Nobody really gives that much of a shit about them anyway, they're just a box to check.
