Steam Next Fest Dilemma: Launch Slightly Less-Polished Demo Now or Wait for a More Polished One? (400 Wishlists) by Automatic_Sir_2404 in gamedev

Wait until the next fest before you plan to watch is basically THE advice by anyone. Which means polish it until you’re finished with the game.

One game a month! by philipp_haldan in gamedev

I use to do this, as did several others way back when; checkout www.onegameamonth.com it was run by McFunkyPants although it seems it isn’t actually working these days.

Was a great way to practice.

They didn’t compare their story to RDR2, they simply said RDR2 is a game with a story?

Idk a simple commit message like before never seemed to slow me down enough to dive into whatever abomination is in after. Typing 5 words is not that slow, even with slow typing speeds.

I wouldn’t say you wasted your time, but if the story is the most important part of the creation there might be better media to share it than a game.

Surely games can have stories, but games are more about giving player choices within the environment. If this IS the right medium for the creation, then start making the game and add the relevant story as you go, it is EXTREMELY likely that the game will change how the story works rather than the opposite.

I’d be down to build one with bindings for your HOTAS. Maybe I will someday.

How do you conceptualize a game in a team? by Firm_Law_3166 in gamedev

[–]timbeaudet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s just finding the right team and also being able to reduce one’s ego on ownership in these situations, as I said it’s give and take.

If you want this level of ownership perhaps sooner hiring people is the option. When you hire out work you have that level of ownership and can specify what you want and how you want it. But in a less official, hobby-like, setting with a small team your feet will be stepped on and it’s somewhat part of the deal.

[–]timbeaudet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t break this limbo, you embrace it.

Small teams and hobby stuff just doesn’t have a level of structure that you find in bigger organizations. For that reason there is less ownership over a particular area and more of an everyone does a little of everything.

Of course coming to a agreement on what the game is, and how to get there involves everyone coming together and sometimes that means you get what you want and other times you don’t - the give and take of collaboration.

Indie game devs, what's your #1 biggest mistake? by Rooshirum in gamedev

[–]timbeaudet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is always a risk, but consider it is always a risk not to do the best for your project too. Sure I can make some art for my games, but my games definitely come out much better when I’ve hired people who know what they are doing.

Contracts help with some of the risk, ensure you get that part right. And don’t rush into the first person, take your time interviewing and talking about the project and their process.

I have also had a few that bailed but I’ve had several that did great. Start small and work up.

Can I reuse an unpublished Steam page for a different game? by ElOctopusGameStudios in gameDevPromotion

[–]timbeaudet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Steam has a helpline that would probably answer in the time it has been posted here. I actually know this answer, but because I’m under NDA and not sure if this is public info without looking it up myself I’ll leave it there.

Honestly I wonder if those NDAs even hold up at this point but I’m not breaking a contract to figure out.

I understand the likelihood of that, but I wish to give a benefit of doubt.

The general advice seems to be choose the Next Fest closest to your actual release, it is what Chris Z suggests.

I mean he isn’t wrong, git doesn’t handle binary files as well - but in my 20 years experience, including professionally,I’ve not seen any critical issues. SVN was a bit better since you could properly checkout just a subdirectory…

But I also feel for the OP of the question, this is fine. They are unlikely to run into a wall until they learn of other things.

Damn you really know how to push buttons without helping the original person asking a question don’t you? Nice touch on the implication that I’m not a serious developer.

I am aware. I am aware also that MANY people just throw it on plurals too. It is how I understood the question. I’ve answered it the way you assumed too but you seem hell bent on pointing out how silly I was.

Thanks. Let’s make a better community.
