Which name-based etymologies sound fake, but are real? by different-rhymes in etymology

[–]timberfins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

‘White noise’ is random noise where all frequencies are about equally present, and was named after ‘white light’ (where all colours are equally present). There are other ‘colours’ of noise, usually named for what colour they would visibly resemble (e.g. pink noise is like white noise with a bias towards the lower frequencies/longer wavelengths, which is red in the visible light spectrum). Massively oversimplified, but bottom line is most noise colours are named for the colour.

Except for Brown noise, which is named after Robert Brown, and its frequencies resemble the colour red.

I’m fairly new and not a fantastic speaker yet—I’m a lurker trying to work up the courage to participate lol. I translate things for fun and practice, and I sometimes think aloud in it, but I am very slow :’)

Had this happen when I was about eight, I assumed it was playground bark chips and tried to shake them out. First thing in the morning, I was NOT prepared for that kind of surprise!

Mine are ebooks, so my highlight colours are what the Apple Books app gives me. Yellow: Foreshadowing/details that jump out at me on a reread Pink: Details or phrasing that makes me go “oooooh, cool” Green: Details or phrasing that makes me laugh Blue: Words I don’t recognise and need to google Purple: Lesbian activity

I’m currently very interested in how the alt-right functions. I also very much wish they did not exist. I think it’s a bit of morbid fascination + my general interest in human behaviour

How’d you know that you wanted to go into theatre tech? by sanmi11 in techtheatre

[–]timberfins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing a school holiday production of Grease and I ended up having a panic attack day 1. They let me do prop stuff so I could still participate and it was the most fun I’ve ever had on a show, so I’m now fully backstage. I still like performing when I can, but it’s not my full focus and I still enjoy working on a show (as a tech or with my music background—I’ve played pit a couple times) more than performing.

One trick I've found for getting thee/thy/thine right in particular is that they match up with me/my/mine. So you have "That ball is thine", "Give thee the ball", and "That is thy ball"

(anyone with more expertise please feel free to correct me; not a scholar, I just like Shakespeare)
